1923 Trailer; Strange World to Lose $100M+; How Rock Saved Superman
Dec 18, 2022
Disney’s Strange World is expected to lose up to $147 million; Helena Bonham Carter goes Fight Club in defense of Johnny Depp and J.K. Rowling; how Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson revived Henry Cavill as Superman; the new 1923 trailer, with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, arrives to expand the Yellowstone universe.
Box Office: Disney had great and terrible news over the Thanksgiving holiday. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever stayed on top for a third week, earning $64 million in the past five days, and has made more than $675 million worldwide, according to BoxOffice Mojo. The bad news: The new Strange World tanked, and is expected to lose $147 million, according to Deadline.
Will Smith Understands: Doing press for his new film Emancipation, Will Smith says he gets it if someone doesn’t want to watch the film because of his Oscar slap of Chris Rock. “I completely understand that,” he said. “If, you know, someone is not ready, I would absolutely respect that and allow them their space to not be ready.” Here’s the video:
“I completely understand that if…someone is not ready, I would absolutely respect that and allow them their space to not be ready…My deepest hope is that my actions don’t penalize my team.”

Helena Bonham Carter: The Fight Club star picked a fight with half of the internet by announcing that she supports J.K. Rowling’s right to think what she wants, that Johnny Depp has been completely vindicated, and that cancel culture is no good. Agree with her or not, I do enjoy when people speak their minds.
Speaking of Speaking Their Minds: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson says that unnamed studio forces were “inexplicably and inexcusably” opposed to him bringing back Henry Cavill as Superman at the end of Black Adam, in which Johnson plays a powerful new supervillain. Johnson notes that the “hierarchy in the DC universe” has changed with the coming of Black Adam, and the new management at DC Films, now led by James Gunn.
Gobots: James Gunn may rule the DC Universe now, but the Guardians of the Galaxy director isn’t too highfalutin’ to make fun of the saddest transforming robots of all, the Gobots. What are Gobots, you ask? Think of them as the MySpace to the Transformers’ Facebook. They’re also now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as of the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, as we explain in this story by a nerd.
1923: Here’s the new trailer for the Yellowstone Television Universe story 1923, which pits Queen Elizabeth II (aka Helen Mirren) and Han Solo/Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) against a very underrated James Bond (Timothy Dalton). Oh, and it sounds like Mirren is Irish in this one. Looks good! Especially promising is TV rookie Harrison Ford, breaking into series television for the first time at the age of 80. 1923 arrives December 18, just a few days ahead of the 100-year-anniversary of 1923.
