Best Movies Coming to Peacock in May 2023
May 2, 2023
At the end of every month, audiences can look forward to the streaming services releasing their schedules for the next one. This time, it’s Peacock’s turn.
The NBCUniversal-owned streamer has a wide variety of both newer and classic films arriving in May. They include older and modern comedy, pre-MCU Marvel stories, factually based dramas, and something for everyone else in between. Let’s look at some of the best titles we can see on Peacock beginning on May 1.
Booksmart
United Artists Releasing
This directorial debut by Olivia Wilde centers on two graduating seniors who want to finally break the rules on their last day of high school. Molly and Amy are lifelong friends and accomplished students who aren’t so popular outside their friend group. Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein star in the leading roles alongside Jessica Williams, Lisa Kudrow, Will Forte, and Jason Sudeikis.
Wilde’s first outing as a director scored acclaim, with critics hailing it for bringing a fresh new spin to the familiar coming-of-age genre. Feldstein even picked up a Best Actress nomination at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards.
Dear White People
Lionsgate
This comedy-drama from Justin Simien centers on the experiences of several black students at a predominantly white Ivy League university. When student Samantha White criticizes white people and racist incidents at the school, she causes a stir that heightens already troubled race relations.
The cast includes Tyler James Williams, Tessa Thompson, Kyle Gallner, Teyonah Parris, Brandon P. Bell, Malcolm Barrett, and Dennis Haysbert. The film received critical acclaim for adding a new perspective to its timely discussions of race. The success led to a television spin-off with a mostly new cast, airing on Netflix from 2017 to 2021.
Erin Brockovich
Universal Pictures.
Julia Roberts stars as the titular character, an environmental activist leading the charge to investigate the Hinkley groundwater contamination scandal. Besides that incident, the real-life Erin Brockovich is known for her three decades of legal work fighting for the public in various environmental cases.
The film also features Albert Finney, Aaron Eckhart, Marg Helgenberger, Peter Coyote, and Cherry Jones. In addition, in a clever meta twist, the real-life Brockovich appears as a waitress named Julia in a cameo. The film received rave reviews, and Brockovich herself noted its high level of factual accuracy.
Face/Off
Paramount Pictures
Nicolas Cage and John Travolta switch faces; need we say more? When Cage’s terrorist character Castor Troy is severely injured in a plane crash, Travolta’s FBI agent Sean Archer replaces his own face with Troy’s to gain information about Troy’s plans. When Troy awakes from a coma, he makes the doctor give him Archer’s face.

For obvious reasons, the film has gained a strong cult following in the 25 years since its release, with Travolta and Cage’s performances earning critical acclaim. The cast also includes Joan Allen, Alessandro Nivola, and Gina Gershon, among others.
Hulk (2003)
Universal Pictures
With more than 30 MCU films over the last 15 years, it’s strange to think about a time before any of that existed. That brings us to 2003’s Hulk. David Banner is a researcher trying to improve human DNA for the United States Government. When his supervisor Thunderbolt Ross forbids human experimentation, David begins experimenting on himself. This backfires when he realizes his newborn son Bruce inherited his mutated DNA. Thus, the Hulk was born. Eric Bana stars as Bruce alongside Jennifer Connelly, Sam Elliot, Josh Lucas, and Nick Nolte.
Receiving mixed reviews from critics plans for a sequel were retooled into 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, which became the second MCU film.
The Joy Luck Club
Hollywood Pictures
Wayne Wang’s 1993 film tells the story of the relationships between Chinese American women and their Chinese immigrant mothers and the ensuing cultural divides. A mild performer at the box office, the film was well-received critically.
Somewhat surprisingly, The Joy Luck Club is only the second of three American films that tells an Asian-American story with a majority Asian cast. The first was 1961’s Flower Drum Song, and the third was 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians. The cast includes Kieu Chinh, Tsai Chin, France Nuyen, Lisa Lu, Tamlyn Tomita, Rosalind Chao, Lauren Tom, and Ming-Na Wen.
King Kong (2005)
Universal Pictures
One of the most iconic characters in all of cinema, King Kong has existed for nearly a century. This 2005 outing serves as the second reboot of the 1933 original, following a 1976 film. Here, a Great Depression-era filmmaker brings his cast and crew to the mysterious Skull Island, where they encounter the gorilla Kong and bring him back to New York City.

The king of performance capture, Andy Serkis, appears as Kong. Other cast members include Naomi Watts, Adrian Brody, and Jack Black. While sequels were planned, they were ultimately abandoned and rebooted again by Warner Bros. with 2017’s Kong: Skull Island.
The Mummy Trilogy
Universal Pictures
Adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser in one of his most iconic roles) travels to the City of the Dead, Hamunaptra. There, he encounters the mummified high priest Imhotep, cursed 3000 years ago.
Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, and Arnold Vosloo starred alongside Fraser. While not necessarily a critical hit, the box office success led to the sequels The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Dwayne Johnson’s The Scorpion King, fresh off its iconic CGI, received his own spin-off (also premiering on Peacock May 1).
Schindler’s List
Universal Pictures
Steven Spielberg’s 1993 epic tells the story of Oskar Schindler, a German who rescued more than 1000 Jewish refugees by employing them in his factories in World War II. Based on the 1982 novel Schindler’s Ark, the film is often cited as one of the greatest ever made.
Liam Neeson appears as the titular Schindler, alongside Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes, Caroline Goodall, and Jonathan Sagall, among others. At the 1994 Oscars, the film took home Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Score, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Art Direction, and Best Cinematography.
