The Banshees of Inisherin Tops 2023 Golden Globe Nominations

Dec 19, 2022

Will Hollywood embrace the Golden Globes? Is America even interested in who the Hollywood Foreign Press Association nominates anymore? We likely won’t know until the Globes return to NBC on Tuesday, January 10th, but the HFPA were up bright and early this morning to reveal their 2023 nominees. And, assuming they care, it was a very big day for “The Banshees of Inisherin” which earned eight nominations on the film side while “Abbott Elementary” took five in the television categories.

Despite new members, the HFPA leaned into their film star-nominating reputation on both the small and big screen. “Everything Everywhere All At Once” earned six nominations while “Babylon,” whose review embargo is intentionally not up until the end of this week (smart strategy by Paramount), and “The Fablemans” took five each. “Elvis,” “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” and “TAR” earned three each. One notable category saw Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift all recognized with Original Song nominations.
Like the Critics Choice Awards nominations, which will be announced Wednesday at 9 AM ET, the Globes are essentially a marketing ploy for the theatrical box office (where that’s still applicable) and a means to get AMPAS and guild members to watch and pay attention to notable performances. For instance, this morning’s Globe nods for Olivia Colman (“Empire of Light”), Dolly De Leon (“Triangle of Sadness”), Angella Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”), Eddie Redmayne (“The Good Nurse”) and Carey Mulligan (“She Said”) could minimally brighten the spotlight on those contenders.
The television nominations saw five programs earn four nominations each: “The Crown,” “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Pam & Tommy” and “The White Lotus.” As it has in past years, the HFPA gave some love to new programs such as “The Bear,” “House of the Dragon,” “Wednesday,” “Andor,” “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” and, um, “Alaska Daily” (for two-time Globe winner Hilary Swank).
For all the concern the HFPA would fix its out-of-touch ways, the organization still managed to snub acclaimed performances by Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”), Janelle Monae (“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”), and “The Woman King” earned just one nomination, for actress Viola Davis.
After multiple criticisms over its business practices and lack of specific POC representation, Hollywood’s publicity agencies basically put the show on ice for 2022. The organization announced its winners in a non-televised ceremony, but barely anyone in the mainstream media covered it. In the months since the HFPA has made structural changes to its organization and recruited over 100 non-member voters from around the world to address the representation issue. The inclusion of new voters effectively doubles the number of media members participating and had many longtime HFPA observers wondering how and if it would skew the nominees. Moreover, it’s still unclear how many nominees will show up to the ceremony. Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture- Drama nominee “The Whale’s” Brendan Fraser has already publicly revealed he would skip the telecast because of his personal experiences with the HFPA over the years.
The 80th Golden Globes will air at 5 PM PT, 8 PM ET on NBC, and will be hosted by Jerrod Carmichael.
