Boots Riley’s New Prime Video Series Is A Coming-Of-Age Tale Mixed With A Superhero Show
May 30, 2023
When it was first announced, “I’m A Virgo” was described as a coming-of-age tale about a 13-foot-tall young Black man finally going outside his home and integrating into the larger world. That alone is an interesting story. But apparently, as seen in the trailer, writer-director-creator Boots Riley has actually disguised a superhero story as a coming-of-age tale.

The trailer for “I’m A Virgo” shows the basic premise of the series. A young Black man finds himself entering the world for the first time. The only problem is that he’s really 13 feet tall, and suddenly, the center of attention. While out in the real world, that’s when we realize this version of California is watched over by a superhero named The Hero, and things don’t go well when the young giant encounters his superhero idol.
The series stars Jharrel Jerome, Walton Goggins, Brett Gray, Kara Young, Allius Barnes, Olivia Washington, Mike Epps, and Carmen Ejogo. As mentioned, the show is masterminded by Riley, who is best known as the filmmaker behind the acclaimed comedy, “Sorry to Bother You.”
“I’m A Virgo” debuts on Prime Video on June 23. You can watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
I’m A Virgo is a darkly comedic fantastical coming-of-age joyride about Cootie (Jerome), a 13-foot-tall young Black man in Oakland, California. Having grown up hidden away, passing time on a diet of comic books and TV shows, he escapes to experience the beauty and contradictions of the real world. He forms friendships, finds love, navigates awkward situations, and encounters his idol, a real-life superhero named The Hero, played by Walton Goggins (The Hateful Eight, The Righteous Gemstones). I’m A Virgo is a mythical odyssey that questions the purpose of the mythical odyssey.
