James Gunn Debunks Rumors Of Henry Cavill’s New DCU Role
Jul 5, 2023
Henry Cavill fans were given a rough ride in the latter part of last year. Having seen the actor reprise his role as Superman, and then be told he would not be returning again as part of James Gunn’s new DCU, and then discovering that he would also be leaving his role in The Witcher, they will take any rumors about his possible return to screens in the near future. Although Jason Momoa is almost certain to be taking on the role of Lobo in the DCU’s future movies, despite his previous appearances as Aquaman, it looks like a similar rumored return for Cavill is not on the cards.
Recently it was suggested that Henry Cavill could be returning to the DC franchise as Frankenstein in the Creature Commandos ensemble. The animated project is said to have mostly completed casting, but Cavill’s potential appearance is not on the cards according to Gunn. In response to a question of whether the rumors had any truth, Gunn said:
“Completely false. We have our Frankenstein – our first choice – and it’s not Henry. Was never discussed with him.”
One of the biggest questions around James Gunn and Peter Safran’s vision for the DCU is where the older stars of the franchise will fit into the new world they are creating. With a new Superman and Batman already being confirmed, there is currently no place for Cavill or Ben Affleck in the franchise, which is something Gunn previously spoke about when revealing the overview of his initial slate of DC projects.
Creature Commandos Has Taken a Unique View When Casting Its Voice Actors
DC Comics
While there have occasionally been live-action movie stars who have gone on to lend their voice to video games or animated projects, James Gunn is looking to have a completely fluid cast in his DCU plans that will see the same actor playing the same role across live-action, animated and video game projects. When originally announcing the projects, Gunn revealed one of the important plans for the new DCU is to have consistent performances across all platforms.
The announcement gained a certain amount of blacklash from some voice actors, who have recently been caught in an ongoing battle over their pay-rates compared to some of the big stars in Hollywood who command much more even for voice only performances. However, for Gunn, having a uniform presence in the DCU is clearly something that is important, but could also rule out some stars who do not want to commit to the kind of long-term roles that have been seen in the past in both the DCU and MCU.
For now, there are been no hint as to who will be in the cast lists of the new DCU, only a few names that Gunn has debunked in his various social media interactions with fans. He has stated on a number of occasions that it will not be too long before more reveals are made about the casts of at least some of the projects already announced. While fans wait for these reveals, they will have to contend with the fact that none of the imminent arrivals will be played by Henry Cavill.
