Thunderbolts Star Steven Yeun Explains Why He Joined the MCU
Jul 12, 2023
The Walking Dead star Steven Yeun has opened up about his role in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure, Thunderbolts. Speaking with Empire, the actor, whose “significant” role in the Mavel outing currently remains a mystery, explained why he wanted to join the superhero saga, naming director Jake Schreier as the main reason behind his decision.
“I don’t know if it was explicitly on my bucket list, it was more the story, getting to work with Jake Schreier again, who directed Beef, and what his intentions were. The intentions of the particular character that they wanted me to play were very clear, and that’s what drew me to the film.”
Best recognized for his role as Glenn in The Walking Dead, Steven Yeun is also known for starring in such critical hits as Okja, Sorry to Bother You, Burning, Minari, and Nope. He is set to star in the Netflix series, Beef, which finds Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier at the helm and details an incident of road rage that slowly consumes the two people involved.
Thunderbolts meanwhile will follow a group of heroes and antiheroes, including Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).
Details of Steven Yeun’s role in Thunderbolts currently remain under wraps, but many have theorized that he will depict Sentry. Considered to be the Marvel version of the DC icon Superman, Sentry is as vastly powerful as his Kryptonian counterpart, but is a little more complex, as he also carries within him the supervillain known as the Void. No doubt Sentry would be a very juicy part for an actor of Yeun’s talent to get his teeth into.

Thunderbolts Will Also Add Harrison Ford to the MCU…But He Doesn’t Know Why
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Alongside Steven Yeun’s mysterious character, Thunderbolts will also add Star Wars and Indiana Jones star Harrison Ford to the MCU fray. But he doesn’t really know why he joined. “I don’t know. I can’t explain myself to myself, I just work here,” the Hollywood legend said when asked why he decided to join the Marvel franchise. “I thought, “Everybody else seems to be having a great time.” I watch all these terrific actors having a good time [in Marvel movies]. I like doing something different to what I’ve ever done and pleasing people with it. So I’ll try a piece of that.”
Ford will take over the role of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross following the death of actor William Hurt, who has portrayed the character throughout the MCU. It seems that Ross has undergone some career changes since last we saw him, and now goes by President Thaddeus Ross after being elected the President of the United States. Ford will reportedly make his debut during Phase 5 of the MCU, and is expected to be introduced in Captain America: New World Order, which will pick up with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as the new Star-Spangled Man and is due for release on May 3, 2024.
Directed by Jake Schreier, filming on Thunderbolts is due to begin this year before being released on July 26, 2024.
