Pixar’s Win or Lose Follow-Up Project Reportedly Canceled

Jul 18, 2023

Pixar has everything ready for the premiere of Win or Lose, its first series for Disney+. However, the studio is not going through a good moment. Even though Elemental, its most recent film, has managed to improve its box office performance over the weeks, it is far from being one of the hits that the company is used to making.

Since the release of Toy Story 4 in 2019, which was highly criticized by some fans, things have not been working out as expected and Pixar is no longer the number one studio in animation. Onward, the project that followed the fourth installment of the saga starring Buzz and Woody, was moderately successful, while the next one, Soul, was released directly on Disney+ due to the pandemic.

Luca suffered the same fate and Turning Red too, although in between these two the studio had the chance to return to theaters with Lightyear. However, the Toy Story spinoff had very low numbers compared to the rest of the franchise, in addition to receiving very bad reviews.

For this reason, Pixar will try its luck on the small screen with a television series titled Win or Lose, which is scheduled to premiere later this year. But it seems that the recent failures of the study are affecting it already.

Win or Lose centers on a softball team looking to win the school championship. Each episode of the series will follow a different protagonist, showing their path to becoming a key player for the team and the value it has in their lives, as well as their love for the sport.

According to an article from The Wrap, while the series premiere stands, it seems that Pixar was planning to build a universe out of the show and that might not happen, as the outlet reports that there was a spinoff in development that has even been canceled even before being officially announced.

Outside of Win or Lose, Pixar already has several projects planned for the future. Elio will be the studio’s next original film, which story follows a little boy with a big active imagination who is suddenly transported to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from all galaxies. After being mistaken for Earth’s ambassador, Elio must form alliances with alien life forms, as well as survive a series of formidable tests and discover his place in the universe.

Additionally, Toy Story 5 and Inside-Out 2 are already in development to further expand some of the company’s most popular franchises. The next Toy Story will reunite Buzz and Woody once again after they were separated at the end of the fourth film. The sequel to Inside-Out will follow an adolescent version of Riley, with new emotions coming into play.

Some rumors also indicate that Finding Nemo could also reach the Disney+ screen with a series, but it has not been confirmed.
