James Gunn Debunks Rumor That ‘Green Lantern’ Series Is Canceled
Dec 27, 2022
To say that there has been quite a bit of turmoil and fan confusion surrounding DC Studios as we end 2022 is an understatement. And it’s not like everything was hunky dory before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as co-CEOs in November. But there’s just so much uncertainty and rumors floating around that fans are just generally not sure what the hell is going on. Well, thank goodness James Gunn has a second job also, as he is often on Twitter serving as the defacto DC Studios rumor police.

The latest rumor to get the James Gunn seal of disapproval is none other than a report saying that the long-in-development “Green Lantern” series at HBO Max has been canceled. Obviously, with what seems to be a bit of a reboot coming for the DCU, it’s not crazy to think the HBO Max series is on the chopping block. But even still, Gunn took to Twitter to deny the report with a simple “fake” tweet reply to a CBR article spreading the rumor.
As mentioned, the “Green Lantern” series has been in development for years. What originally started as a Greg Berlanti-led series focusing on multiple Lanterns (the DC universe equivalent of a cosmic police force) and featuring actors such as Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine, was recently revamped after it lost showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith and decided to switch the focus of the show onto the character of John Stewart. Of course, this was all before Gunn and Safran took over and made the declaration that all DC films and TV shows would adopt a shared universe, a la the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, many just assumed the “Green Lantern” show was going to be revamped again for the third time.

That said, just because Gunn said “fake” to the report that the series is canceled, it doesn’t mean the series is moving forward, or even if it does, that it will be the current iteration. The Green Lantern mythology is one of the most expansive in the DCU and seems like it would be perfect to mine for the big screen and not just HBO Max (disregard the horrible attempt by Ryan Reynolds in 2011, please). Perhaps, Gunn is willing to spread the Green Lantern wealth across films and TV series. Classic Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, could be on the big screen, while Stewart is the focus of the TV series, for example.
No one will really know what the plan is, for sure, until Gunn and Safran unveil their plan for everyone to see. There have been hints that the unveiling will happen in the first part of 2023. So, maybe we’ll have answers soon enough and we won’t have to keep speculating about what’s really going on.
