Scott Michael Foster on Netflix’s Interactive Rom-Com Choose Love

Aug 29, 2023

Note: This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike. If you’re a fan of Netflix’s interactive content like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, a new interactive movie is coming this month, and if romantic comedies are more your style, Choose Love should be on your radar. It is a rom-com that puts the decision in the hands of viewers, just like the other interactive content from Netflix.

MovieWeb had the chance to speak with Scott Michael Foster (Greek, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), one of the leads of the new movie. He shared more about the interactive movie filming process, what we can expect from his character, and who Choose Love will appeal to.

Scott Michael Foster on Filming an Interactive Project

Filming an interactive movie is a bit different from a standard film. Over the course of 44 days, Scott Michael Foster discussed that he and the team “basically shot three full movies” that give viewers “tons of different choice points to choose from” and “16 different endings” they can reach. However, that isn’t without lots of takes and small changes to reflect the options audiences will choose between.

It’s one of those things where you show up with the day’s sides, and you do a scene that’s X, Y, and Z. And then you go back and say ‘Okay, well now, you did X and Y, and now we’re gonna change Z.’ And then you go back and do, ‘Okay, X and Z are they same, now change Y.’

The actor also noted that not only did filming include lots of small changes to sequences, but the script itself isn’t traditional in design either. Comparing it to a ‘tree of life’ (and not the film or religious motif), Choose Love moves in several directions, rather than being read from top to bottom like you might regularly peruse a script.

It’s so hard, ‘cause I remember when I got the script, you don’t read it like a normal script, top down on a page. It’s a side-scroller, it’s like a tree of life that goes left to right, it’s very confusing, but on each of those branches, there are more branches that will eventually come back to your branch.

However, it was those little changes that stood out in Foster’s mind. When asked about his favorite scenes to film, he recalled a sequence that involved himself and Laura Marano, the actress portraying the lead female role Cami, doing an “inside dance joke” while playing a board game with another couple. Marano always did the inside joke slightly differently, which ended up as a funny memory.

It was one of those nights where we just end up […] just gut-busting laughing just because we keep getting it wrong over and over and over again.

Scott Michael Foster on His Character Paul
Holland Clement

Foster’s character Paul is one of the three individuals audiences will help Cami choose between. While the actor couldn’t tell us too much about the character at the time of the interview, Foster admits he’s “rooting for Paul,” the family lawyer, in the end.

I think Paul is the more stable one, the person that I think we would say is a safe choice for Cami. He’s a lawyer, he’s a family lawyer, he’s good with kids.

For those who have seen Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Paul may come across as similar to Foster’s character Nathaniel. Though both are also lawyers, the actor credits Nathaniel as “sort of a work in progress” during his time on the series, though he “became [a] lovable romantic person.” Paul ends up as a bit more of a romantic from the start.

Paul was interesting because he was sort of, he’s a romantic, and he’s in love with Cami, and he wants to be with her, and he does everything he can, even though there’s all these other factors.

The Target Audience For Netflix’s Choose Love
Nicola Dove/Netflix

There is always a target audience for rom-coms, but Foster believes there’s more than that with Choose Love. When asked who he felt the target audience was, he reinforced that rom-com fans would enjoy the film, especially because director Stuart McDonald, whom Foster previously worked with on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, is “great in this genre.”

However, he also notes Choose Love will be a fun watch for anyone who is “curious about something new.” Foster went on to describe his experience with Bandersnatch, which he “was blown away by,” and that the Netflix interactive specials are unique and different.

If you’re into rom-coms, and you haven’t done anything interactive, this is gonna be for you because I think it’s just something different.

With so many choices and endings, audiences will also be able to have a unique experience each time they watch, or can talk with one another about the essentially different films each person watched. Foster noted that’s part of what drew him to the film. The movie isn’t “just doing one story,” and that’s reflected in both the choices audiences will make and the takeaways they’ll every time they watch.

I think people are gonna interact in one way in one viewing, and they might interact in a completely different way in another viewing, and get a different storyline out of it entirely […] I think you’ll walk away from the movie with a different experience every time.

Choose Love will be available to stream and interact with on Netflix starting August 31.
