Creepy Supergirl Deleted Scene Actually Improves The Flash’s Ending

Sep 13, 2023

Summary

Barry Allen’s comical personality sometimes crosses the line into creepy, as shown in a deleted scene where a young Flash becomes infatuated with Supergirl. The deleted scene adds gravitas to the ending’s surprise villain twist but also portrays Barry in an unflattering light with uncomfortable shots of Supergirl sleeping. Despite the awkward presentation, Barry’s romantic feelings for Supergirl in the deleted scene provide context and depth to the movie’s climax, showcasing his enduring torment and love for her.

Barry Allen has always been one of the more comical characters in the DCEU, but a deleted scene from The Flash shows that sometimes his jovial personality can cross the line into creepy. Most of The Flash’s best bits of situational comedy are derived from the older Barry Allen having to deal with his younger self. Though Barry already wears his heart on his sleeve, he’s a bit surprised by just how difficult it can be to deal with himself. A deleted scene from the movie shows young Flash becoming enamored with Supergirl, and while quite creepy, it actually helps The Flash’s ending make a bit more sense.

The scene, which takes place right after young and older Flash and Batman rescue Supergirl from imprisonment, has been uploaded to YouTube, and it’s clear why the scene was cut. Despite adding some more gravitas to the ending’s surprise villain twist, it paints Barry in an unflattering light.

In the scene, Supergirl is sleeping on a table in Wayne Manor after over-exerting herself during her prison break. While she sleeps, younger Barry covers her with a blanket, stares at her for a few beats too long, then professes his love for her to his older self. The scene has a few funny quips like “I just feel like I understand all those songs by The Beatles now…” but the repeated shots of her sleeping body while Barry talks about how beautiful she is are indeed quite uncomfortable. Older Barry, thankfully, seems quite uncomfortable with the comments and tells his younger self that he’s not in love.

How Supergirl’s Deleted Scene Improves The Flash

While it’s a bit disconcerting to see Barry Allen swoon over Supergirl as she lies unconscious, the reveal that he has romantic feelings for her still makes The Flash’s ending a bit better. In the climactic battle that pits original Flash, young Flash, Batman, and Supergirl against Zod’s Kryptonian army, the latter two die, which causes Flash to use his time-travel ability to go back and try to keep them alive. Despite both Flash’s best efforts, the two keep dying. Original Barry eventually understands that there’s no way to save them, but younger Barry becomes obsessed.

Younger Barry travels The Flash movie’s timeline for decades, reliving the battle in an attempt to save Supergirl and Batman, eventually becoming disfigured and corrupted into the Dark Flash. His willingness to endure incredible torment for years for people he barely knows hits harder with the knowledge that he’s in love with Supergirl. The Flash’s deleted scene may reveal this affection in an unflattering way, but it does add some welcome context and depth to the movie’s climax.
