Bob Iger Hints At Massive Cuts to MCU and Star Wars Projects; Says Recent Disappointments Are Partly Down To Disney+ Shows

Sep 17, 2023

Disney’s Bob Iger has revealed that Disney’s cost cutting exercise will see its biggest franchises slow down their production in the coming years. This comes as Iger cited the volume of Disney+ content being put out by Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm as being one of the reasons for the House of Mouse’s underwhelming box office results in the last couple of years.

From the moment Iger returned as Disney’s CEO, ousting Bob Chapek from the role, it was clear that something changed within the company, as many Marvel projects received heft scheduling shifts and some green-lit projects seemed to fall off the radar entirely. Now it is clear that Marvel Studios is drastically pulling back its output from the several new TV shows and up to four movies a year that it was previously planning. As for Lucasfilm, their main focus for the Star Wars franchise seems to have moved to big screen movies rather than the influx of Disney+ shows that have been put out in the last few years. On CNBC Thursday Iger said:

“You pull back not just to focus, but also as part of our cost containment initiative. Spending less on what we make, and making less. Marvel is a great example of that. It had not been in the television business at any significant level, and not only did they increase their movie output, but they ended up making a number of TV series. Frankly, it diluted focus and attention.”

Will The MCU and Star Wars Franchises Have Less Output in Future?

Not necessarily, but what is more likely is that the two biggest franchises in the world will see a slower release schedule and in the case of Disney+ content, maybe a lot less in the way of spin-offs of spin-offs.

This year Marvel Studios will release a total of 3 movies and three TV shows. Originally, 2023 was expected to see up to six TV shows make their debut, with the same amount coming in the next few years, along with at least four movies each year. 2023 has seen Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania fail to make a huge dent in the box office at the beginning of the year, although Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 has become the MCU’s biggest hit since last year’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The Marvels is currently slated for a November release. In the meantime on Disney+, Secret Invasion, Loki Season 2 and Echo will be the only shows hitting the platform.

The Star Wars franchise has similarly been churning out a number of TV shows, such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Mandalorian and its many spin-offs, including the upcoming Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew, along with numerous animated series, but the last movie release was The Rise of Skywalker. Now Lucasfilm are looking to focus on making Star Wars great cinematic experiences again with three movies coming to expand the saga further than ever before.
