William Friedkin’s Final Film Premieres On Showtime On October 6

Sep 22, 2023

The movie world lost one of its greatest living directors when William Friedkin passed away in early August. And Friedkin’s death happened just weeks before his last film, “The Caine Mutiny Court-Marshal,” had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. But Showtime swooped in on the Lido to snag the rights to the movie, and now it arrives on the streamer early next month.

Based on Herman Wouk‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, “The Caine Mutiny Court-Marshal” follows a U.S. naval officer on trial for mutiny after his captain jeopardizes the lives of his crew.
Here’s an official synopsis for “The Caine Mutiny Court-Marshal,” courtesy of Showtime:
At the start of a naval court-martial, Barney Greenwald, a skeptical naval lawyer, reluctantly agrees to defend Lt. Steve Maryk, a first officer of the Navy who took control of the U.S.S. CAINE from its domineering captain Lt. Philip Francis Queeg during a violent sea storm in unfriendly waters. As the trial progresses, Greenwald becomes increasingly concerned and questions if the events aboard the Caine were a true mutiny or simply the courageous acts of a group of sailors who did not trust their unstable leader.
“The Caine Mutiny Court-Marshal” stars Jason Clarke, Jake Lacy, Kiefer Sutherland, Monica Raymund, Lewis Pullman, Jay Duplass, Tom Riley, and the late Lance Reddick.
Along with directing, Friedkin adapts Wouk’s novel for the film.  Annabelle Dunne and Matt Parker produce the film, with Michael Salven and Mike Upton executive producing.  Paramount Global Content Distribution distributes.
As noted earlier, “The Caine Mutiny Court-Marshal” premiered at the Venice Film Festival last month. Read The Playlist’s review of the movie here.
“The Caine Mutiny Court-Marshal” streams exclusively on Paramount+ with Showtime on October 6 before it premieres on Showtime two nights later on October 8. Watch a trailer for Friedkin’s final film below.
