Netflix

Full of Oscar-level talent, NYAD is the Free Solo of swimming. The story of Diana Nyad is an incredible one. She is a renowned athlete in the world of marathon swimming and is courageous enough to attempt one of the most dangerous open-water swims in the sport. At the age of 60, three decades after retiring from marathon swimming, she became obsessed with completing the 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida and was determined to be the first person to do it without a shark cage.

The film stars four-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening as Diana Nyad and two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster as Nyad’s best friend and coach, Bonnie Stoll. This documentary drama comes from the Oscar-winning Free Solo filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, who are experts at creating stories about unbelievable triumphs of the human spirit. Nyad is certainly not a film to miss.

The Killer stars Michael Fassbender in the leader role and has Tilda Swinton playing a character called the Acteur. On the surface, it appears to be another tense, murderous drama from David Fincher, who brought us a long line of incredible dark films like Gone Girl, Seven, and Zodiac. This neo-noir film is sure to expand his filmography with another frightful psychological thriller and will no doubt please fans of the director and the genre.

Rustin
Available to Stream on Netflix on Nov. 17
Netflix

Bayard Rustin was the man who organized the momentous 1963 March on Washington, where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. Rustin was an advisor to King and dedicated his life to the pursuit of racial equality and fighting discrimination. This biopic is directed by five-time Tony award-winning playwright George C. Wolfe and will tell the story of a man who made mountainous contributions to the fight for civil rights and then was forgotten by history.

Emmy award winner Colman Domingo will star in the title role. Famous for his incredible performances in the theater and on screen in Euphoria and Fear the Walking Dead, he will surely bring life to this as-yet-unrecognized historical hero. The cast of Rustin also includes a wealth of notable Black talent such as CCH Pounder, Jeffery Wright, Glynn Turman, Chris Rock, and many others. This film brings together a group of extremely gifted artists from both stage and screen and is definitely worth your time.

Leo
Available to Stream on Netflix on Nov. 21

Leo is a lovely, animated kid’s film about a 74-year-old lizard and his turtle friend who are pets in a Florida school’s classroom terrarium. They’ve been there for decades. One day, when Leo finds out he only has one more year to live, he decides to escape to experience life on the outside. But instead of making a run for the door, he realizes he has to save his class from an impossibly mean substitute teacher.

Leo should be another great Adam Sandler film. Written and produced by the actor/comedian, it has a laundry list of amazing comedic actors who often work alongside Sandler. Rob Schneider, Jason Alexander, Cecily Strong, and Jo Koy all make an appearance in the astounding voice cast. Sandler plays the titular lizard, and Bill Burr stars as his turtle companion. It’s a lovely film that’s funny for kids and adults alike.
