‘Napoleon,’ ‘Maestro,’ ‘The Killer’ ‘The Marvels’ & More

Nov 3, 2023

As is often the case, November is a packed month for the film release schedule. There are plenty of festival favorites that made the rounds and are now getting their mainstream release. It’s also a big month for notable directors with new films from everyone from Sofia Coppola to Ridley Scott. With that said, we can’t write about everything, but even those not mentioned on the below list are worthy of checking out. There’s the Colman Domingo-led “Rustin” available on Netflix on November 17. Awkwafina and Sandra Oh make for a hilarious duo in “Quiz Lady,” out November 3. For more November 3 releases, Daisy Ridley and Ben Mendelsohn star in “The Marsh King’s Daughter” from director Neil Burger, and Meg Ryan returns to her romantic comedy roots in “What Happens Later.” “Godzilla Minus One” looks to be one of the most exciting monster flicks in ages. Sam Esmail adapts the novel by Rumaan Alam with “Leave the World Behind” out November 22, while Eli Roth brings horror to the season in “Thanksgiving” arriving November 17. There’s truly something for everyone.

“All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt”As one of the most critically acclaimed films out of this year’s Sundance, “All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt” has its theatrical premiere this month. The film is executively produced by Barry Jenkins and directed by first-time feature filmmaker Raven Jackson. Starring Charleen McClure, Moses Ingram, and Reginald Helms Jr., the film follows the life of a Black woman in Mississippi from her childhood through her adult years. Release Date: In theaters November 3 via A24.

“Priscilla”Sofia Coppola’s latest explores the life of Priscilla Presley in “Priscilla.” Cailee Spaeny stars as Priscilla Beaulieu as the film follows her first meeting with Elvis Presley (played by Jacob Elordi) and their subsequent romance and the fallout from it. Based on the novel “Elvis and Me” released in 1985 by Priscilla Presley who also executively produced the film, it makes for a striking counterpoint to last year’s Austin Butler-led “Elvis.” Release Date: In theaters November 3 via A24.

“The Marvels”As the second season of “Loki ” nears its end, the MCU isn’t slowing down with its latest film, “The Marvels” hot on its tails. The film features a team-up with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel, and Teyonah Parris’s Monica Rambeau as they deal with a destabilized universe. Nia DaCosta directs with a script from DaCosta, Megan McDonnell, and Elissa Karasik. The supporting cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Zawe Ashton, and Park Seo-joon. Release Date: In theaters November 10 via Marvel Studios.

“The Holdovers” Alexander Payne and Paul Giamatti reunite for the first time since the award-winning “Sideways” for the comedy/drama “The Holdovers” where Giamatti plays a professor who offers to stay on campus during the holidays to babysit a handful of students who don’t have anywhere else to go. Written by David Hemingson, the film also stars Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa. Our critic who saw the film at Telluride called it “prestige film comfort food.” Release Date: In theaters November 10 via Focus Features.

“The Killer”Michael Fassbender stars in the latest from David Fincher with “The Killer.” Based on the French graphic novel series of the same name by Alexis “Matz” Nolent with illustrations by Luc Jacamon, the film adaptation is penned by Andrew Kevin Walker.
