Chucky Season 3 Ends on Shocking Cliffhanger, Show Is Now on Hiatus

Nov 8, 2023

Summary

Chucky’s aging and loss of powers take center stage in season three, leaving fans wondering what will happen to the pint-sized killer doll. The mid-season finale of Chucky ends with a gripping cliffhanger before the screen fades to black. The split episodes and hiatus until 2024 are a result of the ongoing strikes in Hollywood, with Universal making the decision to release the first four episodes during the Halloween season.

Be warned: SPOILERS for Chucky season three below.

The third season of Chucky has ended on a major cliffhanger before its hiatus. While the franchise has never been shy about killing the titular doll, Chucky season three has revealed that everyone’s favorite pint-sized murder might really be dying. The third season of Chucky has heavily focused on the killer doll attempting to regain favor with Damballa, the voodoo god that has given Chucky his special powers since 1988’s Child’s Play. However, since season two’s exorcism by a Catholic priest, Chucky has been losing his powers and showing physical signs of aging.

Episode four (which serves as the mid-season finale of the latest season) finishes with Chucky delivering what will no doubt become another iconic line from mini-murderer. While staring into a mirror Chucky pulls off his Phantom of the Opera mask, revealing his visibly aged features. The murderous doll then punches the glass before questioning why his kills at The White House weren’t enough for Damballa.

Henry then comes into the room and sees Chucky. After being asked if he’s okay, Chucky declares, “I’m f–king dying!” before the screen cuts to black.

While fans of the series are undoubtedly curious to find out whether or not the doll will finally meet his demise, there are officially no more new episodes of Chucky season three until 2024.

Don Mancini Confirmed That the Season 3’s Split Episodes Are a Result of Strikes
Syfy/USA Network

Unlike previous seasons of Chucky, this one has been split into two halves with the four remaining episodes of the season expected to be released sometime in 2024. At this time, there is currently no official release date for the remaining episodes. However, while chatting with ComicBook.com prior to the latest episode of Chucky, creator Don Mancini gave fans of the series an update and confirmed that season three’s split episodes are the result of the dual strikes in Hollywood. Mancini said:

“It’s a necessary experiment born of the strike, yes. We were shooting right up until the point SAG-AFTRA shut everything down. Knowing that it was coming, which really, we didn’t know for sure until I think it was just like 10 days before when it was really looking like it was going that way. Universal basically told us,’Look, Chucky has such a presence for NBC this fall because of the mazes at the parks,’ and all that. So they really wanted something to air during Halloween season. So once we saw that the strike was coming, we sort of like put all of our resources and time into finishing the first four. We really have almost finished five and six as well. But we like literally just a day left to finish five and six. And then a few more weeks to do seven and eight. But we do have pieces of seven and eight already shot as well.”

Mancini added that it is because of the ongoing strikes that the third season of Chucky ends with such a tantalizing cliffhanger.

“So, when (the strike) happened, Universal said, ‘Okay, well, this is what we can do.’ And fortuitously enough, the end of episode 4 really did lend itself (to a hiatus), and that was just coincidence, because that was always what was going to happen at the end of episode 4. And we knew that since that was the Halloween episode, as we do every year, we try to make the Halloween episode a little bit special. So it functions as a good cliffhanger because no one has ever seen Chucky in this with this particular dilemma before.”

The first two seasons of Chucky are available to watch on Peacock and Shudder, while new episodes of season three have been available to stream on Peacock the day after their cable premiere.
