Showrunner Jeb Stuart Departs Netflix’s Upcoming Series
Jan 4, 2023
Jeb Stuart is a man with a very interesting career. He started hot as a screenwriter for films such as “Diehard,” “The Fugitive,” and “Another 48 Hrs.” However, as the ‘90s came to a close, you didn’t hear much about Stuart. But last year, he came back with a vengeance as the showrunner of the Netflix hit series, “Vikings: Valhalla.” And towards the end of 2022, it was announced that he would be showrunner of perhaps his biggest project yet, a series based on “Assassin’s Creed.” Well, as we enter 2023, it appears that has changed.

Speaking to Collider, Jeb Stuart was asked about the status of “Assassin’s Creed.” For those that don’t know, “Assassin’s Creed” is based on the massively popular video game series of the same name. It was previously adapted as a feature film that stars Michael Fassbender. It’s a series that would have the hype of something like “The Last of Us” or “Halo.” Alas, Stuart shared that he is “no longer involved” in the project.

He added that there was a “difference in vision” and said, “I think it was a little bit of a move of executives from LA to London, and it allowed the London group who, unfortunately, had to inherit my vision of what it was instead of getting to develop their own vision. So I think that’s fair. I know it’s going to be great whenever it comes out. I think the Ubisoft guys are fantastic. I think it’s a terrific franchise. It was just a good, mutual time to move on for both sides.”

Again, it’s not like Stuart is hurting for work. “Vikings: Valhalla” is prepping for the release of Season 2 next week, and it’s expected that the show will likely continue past that. Stuart has plenty to work on. Unfortunately, it appears his work won’t be on “Assassin’s Creed.” And given the spotty (speaking lightly) track record for video game adaptations, especially as series (looking at you, “Resident Evil”), it’s a bummer that someone with Stuart’s ability isn’t aboard.
That said, there’s still hope that this could turn around. Netflix, the studio producing the new “Assassin’s Creed” series, is willing to spend lots of money to make something good. So, maybe there’s a chance that all of this turnover will be for the best. We’ll just have to wait and see.
