All The New Movies Coming to Streaming This Week

Dec 15, 2023

It’s a busy week in the world of streaming as we count down the final days of 2023. Lucky for you, we’ve got plenty of coverage and insight on it all to take you through it. Whether you’re wanting one of the year’s best from Wes Anderson, a little film about a big toy, or one of the most well-acted road trip movies you’ll ever see, we’ve got that for you.

Asteroid City
Release Date: Tuesday, December 12 on Prime Video

Related ‘Asteroid City’ Review: Wes Anderson’s Pastel Alien Encounter Flick Goes All-In on Style The latest film from the director of ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ and ‘The French Dispatch’ is his most beautiful yet.

Not only is Asteroid City one of Wes Anderson’s best films to date, but it provides a glimpse of what the director thinks of his own films in a beautiful yet bittersweet fashion. Built upon layers of abstraction, a television show that is about the making of the play that is the movie we are watching, Asteroid City is the director at his most reflective yet. It is a thrilling experience that is overflowing with his love of the craft that also lays you flat when you least expect it. There is nothing like it this year, and it is worth seeking out for that alone. Though it is odd to see it coming to streaming so soon after making a killing at the box office, any opportunity to see it again or for the first time is worth taking.

Asteroid City Following a writer on his world famous fictional play about a grieving father who travels with his tech-obsessed family to small rural Asteroid City to compete in a junior stargazing event, only to have his world view disrupted forever. Release Date June 23, 2023 Rating R Runtime 105 minutes

Related ‘Barbie’ Review: Greta Gerwig’s World of Plastic Is Fantastic Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, Greta Gerwig turns ‘Barbie’ into much more than just a toy commercial.

The little indie movie Barbie is one you may have heard of being a part of that whole Barbenheimer thing. Directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, Barbie is an adaptation of the infamous toy that it attempts to turn upside down. It is a film that is defined by its influences, which includes everything from the enduring The Truman Show to Jacques Tati’s magnificent PlayTime is interwoven into a world of plastic that is often quite fantastic. Most interestingly, the story then becomes about a character forging her own identity. Bouncing between the world of Barbieland and our own, it is a film that all comes down to Robbie’s stereotypical Barbie having to make a choice. Will she stay behind in a world where every day is a perfect one that she has grown to realize may not be what she wants or come to Los Angeles which has its own fair share of problems she must face? There’s only one way to find out.

Gran Turismo
Release Date: Friday, December 15 on Netflix

Related ‘Gran Turismo’ Review: Neill Blomkamp’s Video Game Adaptation Swerves Into Cliches The latest PlayStation game to get an adaptation is a strange choice that feels built on the cliches of much better racing films.

A video game adaptation that swerves into cliches, Gran Turismo remains one of the strangest releases to come out this year. Based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough who went from being one of the best at the video game of the same name to being an actual competitive racer, Gran Turismo is an underdog story about this journey. It’s hard to think of any video game adaptation of recent memory that has taken this approach, which itself isn’t entirely a compliment, but the performances are solid enough to make it work in parts. Gran Turismo doesn’t reinvent the wheel by any means, but it may just speed along fast enough to win over those looking for a sports drama to get wrapped up in.

Gran Turismo Based on the unbelievable, inspiring true story of a team of underdogs – a struggling, working-class gamer, a failed former race car driver, and an idealistic motorsport exec – who risk it all to take on the most elite sport in the world. Release Date August 25, 2023 Rating PG-13 Runtime 135 minutes

A necessary correction to last year’s Elvis, Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla instead looks at this story through the eyes of the wife of the king rather than the man himself. With great set design, strong performances, and an understated yet focused approach, Priscilla is a film you won’t want to sleep on.

Priscilla When teenager Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley at a party, the man who’s already a meteoric rock ‘n’ roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, and a gentle best friend. Related ‘The Unknown Country’ Review: The Year of Lily Gladstone Begins in This Meditative Journey Through the American West Morrisa Maltz’s road drama takes time for the beauty of the people we find along the way in yet another showcase for a remarkable Lily Gladstone.

A meditative journey through the American West that marks the beginning of the year of Lily Gladstone, The Unknown Country is a road drama that takes time for the beauty of the people we find along the way. At the core of this is Gladstone’s Tana. She has just lost her grandmother who she had been caring for up until the very end. Devastated by her death, she hits the road to travel from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Oglala Lakota County, South Dakota after getting an invitation to her cousin’s wedding. As she then goes further and further from home, she also gets closer to understanding what it is that will begin to help her heal. Even in the moments where it can feel a little rough around the edges, the portrait being painted is a breathtaking and unrestrained one. It all comes together to ensure that, in the long cinematic history of American road movies, The Unknown Country carves out an indelible legacy of its own all the way to its final series of shattering shots.
