Ricky Gervais Armageddon Review: Offended is the Point
Jan 7, 2024
Strap yourselves in if you’re a little prone to being offended, your wokeness is about to be put to sleep in this 63-minute powerhouse performance! Here’s our Ricky Gervais Armageddon review.
There’s nothing like a Ricky Gervais stand-up to put the world into perspective as the second the Netflix comedy stand-up dropped the internet was awash with criticism of the show and those who have been offended by it but people seem to be missing something here, being offended is the whole point Ricky is trying to make from start to finish!
Close-to-the-bone jokes that only a handful of comedians can get away with without being cancelled in today’s modern sensitive society come thick and fast in Ricky Gervais’s Armageddon as he lays siege to gender identity, woke culture and more.
Ripping open the completely hollow arguments that the social media woke mob make on Twitter on a day-to-day basis and then dialling himself back from saying too much of what he really feels only to go right ahead and say something even more controversial (by today’s standards).
The fact that Ricky has to not only remind his audience but his viewers that they’re ‘just jokes’ throughout the show further cements the ridiculous society we live in today where you can’t say anything without offending somebody out there.
Ricky has a big set of cojones on him to say even half the stuff he does but like his famous Golden Globes speech proved he doesn’t care and that’s what makes him so likeable as he becomes a figurehead for what many of us talk about to our friends/families in our everyday lives without a social media judging panel taking it the wrong way.
Dividing people is part of the job description for Ricky Gervais but there’s a reason why this comedy show is still the most watched on Netflix currently and that’s because of the fact above, he’s just saying what the majority of people are thinking or talking about off social media.
Even for me, some jokes went a little far and yet the one joke that made headlines around the world isn’t even the worst (or best should I say) of the lot but the fact that he’s able to stir up the sensitive lot out there brings me much joy.
Ricky is playing a role, he’s on stage performing an act and he nails it to a tee reeling off joke after joke that has you crying one minute and then looking around the room next to see which one of your friends has been offended by what he’s said. That’s a fun game in itself!
Ploughing through his show with a no-care attitude Ricky manages to deliver (for me) one of his best stand-up shows to date but I only wish that he dialled back on the apologies or ‘trigger warnings’.
Probably thinking about how his last Netflix caused backlash from the trans community most of his routine does come with an explanation for why he’s said it or some reasoning behind why it was included, for me, this wasn’t needed.
Ricky is at his best when he’s just letting rip and for a show called Armageddon it certainly feels like a countdown warning sequence has been initiated before every mildly offensive remark.
My whole being wanted Ricky to just scrap the early warnings and just let that rocket fly with no thought or consequence, that’s the Ricky I know and love yet even the craziness of the world today has affected how his stand-up is being delivered and that’s a real shame to me.
Juvenile dad jokes are the bread and butter of the Ricky Gervais stand-up routine, a long-forgotten comedy where you can say whatever you think and put a smile on people’s faces.
It’s a good job there are comedians like Ricky, Dave Chapelle and Matt Rife in this world otherwise those laughs would get more and more censored by the year.
Armageddon is the type of show we need in our lives just to keep us sane, to give us that reminder of the days gone by when comedy was actually funny.
Go and check out Ricky Gervais’s Armageddon on Netflix today!
