Peaky Blinders Movie Will Film This Year, Steven Knight Confirms

Jan 7, 2024

Summary

Peaky Blinders fans will be excited to know that the long-awaited movie is set to begin shooting later this year. The movie will serve as a replacement for the seventh season of the series and is being described as “cinematic” in scope. In addition to the movie, there are also two spinoff projects in the works, one set in Boston and another focusing on the character Polly Shelby.

Steven Knight has revealed when the long-gestating Peaky Blinders movie will go before cameras and, thankfully, it’s soon. Speaking recently with Radio Times, Knight confirmed that he is hard at work on the project, and is currently working on “the final bits” of the script with the intention of beginning shooting later this year.

“I’m just working on the final bits of it at the moment. I just sit down at the keyboard and start. It’s a bit like having a dream, for me. You sit there and all this stuff comes, and then you read it back and think, ‘That’s pretty good – but where did it come from?’ The plan is to start shooting that in the middle of next year.”

Now, when Knight said “next year” he means 2024, meaning that fans of Peaky Blinders will hopefully see the gang return in just a few months’ time.

Debuting back in 2013, Peaky Blinders follows Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, the dangerous leader of the Peaky Blinders, a criminal gang based in Birmingham in 1919. Covering all manner of crime, betrayal, violence, and political schemes, the Peaky Blinders series came to an end last year, ending with Tommy riding off, possibly into a new life, with the world believing him dead.

The Peaky Blinders movie has been in the works for some time now, with Knight revealing back in 2020 that it would stand in place of a seventh season. Details of what the movie will involve remain largely under wraps for now, but no doubt audiences cannot wait to delve back into Knight’s world of crime, violence, and flat caps.

The Peaky Blinders Movie Will Be ‘Cinematic’ in Scope

One thing that Knight has teased about the movie is the scope, which he has compared to none other than 007 himself.

“The biggest difference between a film and TV series is the budget. When you do stuff for TV, you often have to ask people to imagine it. But with a film, you can really do it. You can blow stuff up. Will Tommy be giving James Bond a run for his money? Maybe. There are parallels. We always thought of Peaky as very cinematic, so we are finally finding a screen big enough for what we want to do.”

The movie is just one of several Peaky Blinders projects currently in development, with Netflix revealing recently that at least two spinoffs based on the crime drama series are on their way.

“One of those would be set in Boston during the middle of the 20th century, a couple decades after the original Peaky Blinders, while another would focus on Polly, the matriarch of the criminal Shelby clan.”

So, while the main Peaky Blinders series has now ended, it sounds like there is still a lot more to come from the Shelby gang and the criminal world around them.
