Guy Ritchie’s Spin-Off Gangster Series Hits Netflix In March

Jan 15, 2024

As we recently noted, it’s time to move over Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg (and maybe even Steven Soderbergh) because if not the hardest-working man in film showbiz, director Guy Ritchie might be the fastest-moving director in showbiz. Ritchie just announced a new movie, “The Fountain Of Youth,” with Natalie Portman and John Krasinski, but it’s possible he may release two other films in 2024. And add a series on top of it, which is definitely coming this year. That’s right, Ritchie’s “The Gentleman,” a series spin-off based on his 2019 gangster comedy, is coming this March on Netflix (and yes, it’s on our Most Anticipated TV list)

The 2019 film starred Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Colin Farrell, Hugh Grant, and more. It’s unclear how connected this version is to the movie (though it all seems to tie into McConaughey’s character from the original film), but it stars Theo James, Kaya Scodelario, Daniel Ings, Joely Richardson, Giancarlo Esposito, Peter Serafinowicz, and Vinnie Jones. Today, Netflix unveiled the teaser trailer for the action comedy series and revealed veteran actor Ray Winstone will star in the series. Winstone plays Bobby Glass, a career criminal from the East End of London who founded an industrial cannabis empire.
Theo James stars as The Duke of Halstead, Eddie Horniman, who finds himself embroiled in criminality after inheriting his father’s estate, and Kaya Scodelario (“Crawl,” “The Pale Horse”) plays Susie Glass, Bobby’s effortlessly stylish and steely daughter who runs the day-to-day business of the empire.
Here’s the official synopsis:
THE GENTLEMEN sees Eddie Horniman (Theo James) unexpectedly inherit his father’s sizable country estate – only to discover it’s part of a clandestine cannabis empire. Moreover, many unsavory characters from Britain’s criminal underworld want a piece of the operation. Determined to extricate his family from their clutches, Eddie tries to play the gangsters at their own game. However, as he gets sucked into the world of criminality, he begins to find a taste for it.
Other members of the cast include Chanel Cresswell (“This is England”), Michael Vu, Max Beesley (“Hijack”), Jasmine Blackborow (“Marie Antoinette”), Harry Goodwins (“In His Hands: The Emergence”), Dar Salim (“The Covenant”), Pearce Quigley (“Detectorists”), and Ruby Sear.
Ritchie will direct at least the pilot episode and co-wrote it with Matthew Read. As for those two other movies? Ritchie is definitely releasing “The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare” with Henry Cavill in the spring. He could potentially have another untitled action movie with Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Eiza González out later in the year as well.
Netflix hasn’t revealed an exact date but says “The Gentleman” is expected to arrive in March. Watch the first teaser trailer below.
