Paul Bettany Reveals He And Elizabeth Olsen Improvised Vision’s Avengers: Infinity War Death

Feb 7, 2024

Summary

Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen improvised Vision’s death scene in Avengers: Infinity War. The Russo Brothers asked them to improvise because the pre-visualization of the scene didn’t work. Vision’s death in the movie has had significant implications for future MCU projects, including WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Paul Bettany has shockingly revealed that Wanda killing Vision, one of the best scenes in Avengers: Infinity War, was improvised by him and Elizabeth Olsen. Avengers: Infinity War’s cast brought their A-game to the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, which is still to this day considered by many to be the best MCU movie. It seems that even included improvising one of Avengers: Infinity War’s pivotal moments.

Speaking to Collider, Bettany said that Avengers: Infinity War’s directors, the Russo Brothers, asked him and Elizabeth Olsen to improvise Vision’s death scene. According to the actor, that was due to the pre-visualization of how the scene would happen not working. While Vision did not get much to do in Avengers: Infinity War, his death would be one of the movie’s saddest moments, setting up a number of MCU projects. Check out the full quote below:

“It was hilarious. None of us knew who was gonna die until like the day before or something like that. They showed us a sort of pre-visualization of that and everybody was like, well, I guess I gotta take the kids out of private school.
The Russo Brothers came up to us [Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen] and said, “Hey, listen, can you just improvise this scene?” And I go, “What? Improvise being a robot getting killed?” I’ve got no frame of reference! And Lizzie was just laughing at it, and we’re so relaxed with each other that… I don’t know how it would’ve worked other than that, because we both really trust each other and, somehow, we got to something that worked.”

How Vision’s Avengers: Infinity War Death Shaped The MCU

Vision’s death in Avengers: Infinity War would have ramifications for a series of MCU projects. In the Avengers movie itself, the death led to Thanos taking the Soul Stone and completing his Infinity Gauntlet, snapping his fingers to dust away half of the universe’s population. After that, a new version of Vision would appear in the MCU.

WandaVision built upon the death of Bettany’s character to show what that trauma had done to Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff. The Scarlet Witch created a Hex that took over Westview, bringing a fake version of Vision to life and conjuring the couple’s twin sons, Tommy and Billy. By the end of the series, Wanda had to do away with her perfect reality, meaning Vision was once again gone; however, the series saw the debut of White Vision, who will return for the Marvel series Vision Quest.

The original Vision’s body was rebuilt to form White Vision, with the new character getting the memories of the first Vision and flying away at the end of WandaVision.

Enraged by the death of Vision and her sons, the Scarlet Witch went on a murderous rampage through the multiverse in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which resulted in her apparent death. With Bettany confirming that he will be back as Vision, White Vision could play a role in multiple MCU projects, including the WandaVision spinoff Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, which is rumored to include the return of one of Wanda and Vision’s sons — Billy. None of those stories would have been possible if it were not for Vision’s death in Avengers: Infinity War.
