Tony Shalhoub Shows Up to SAG Awards à la Mr. Monk with Hand Sanitizer

Feb 27, 2024

Summary

Nominee Tony Shalhoub shows up to the SAG Awards with hand sanitizer in honor of his beloved character, Monk.
Despite not winning for his work in
Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie,
Shalhoub is grateful for the opportunity to play Adrian Monk again.
The possibility of another
Monk
film or show lies in creator Andy Breckman’s hands; Shalhoub remains open to the idea.

“Here’s the thing…” Tony Shalhoub will always be synonymous with the wonderfully germaphobic character of Adrian Monk. And at the 30th SAG Awards, Shalhoub showed up with some hand sanitizer in honor of the world’s greatest detective, Mr. Monk. And “here’s what happened,” as Shalhoub reflected on returning to the role after playing the eccentric former detective on television for eight seasons. Shalhoub said in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“It’s challenging, it’s daunting, because we felt that we ended the show, 14 years ago, we ended on such a high note. If we were going to revisit it, revisit all these characters, we wanted it to be as good if not better than our last episodes. And we feel like we accomplished it. We feel really proud of the movie.”

Monk Release Date July 12, 2002 Seasons 8

Shalhoub was nominated for best Male Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries for his fine work on Peacock’s film, Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie. However, it was Steven Yeun who walked away with the award thanks to his performance as Danny Cho on the Netflix series, Beef. However, Shalhoub seemed so grateful for having the opportunity to play Mr. Monk once again. Shalhoub added:

It’s very gratifying. You just never know if there is still an appetite for a show that’s been off for that many years, but apparently people are still interested in these characters and the trajectory of the main character.

Mr. Monk’s Last Case?
Peacock

In addition to appearing at the SAG Awards as a nominee for his work in Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie, Tony Shalhoub was also on hand to support his co-stars from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Both the show’s lead, Rachel Brosnahan, aka the DCU’s Lois Lane, and Family Guy’s Alex Borstein, were nominated for best Female Actor in a Comedy Series. However, The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri took home the award. Now, the question becomes: Is there more Monk to come?

Circling back to Mr. Monk’s Last Case… hopefully, it wasn’t truly the last fans have seen of Adrian Monk. A Monk Movie was a horrible bookend to what was eight seasons of unparalleled television. In nearly a decade’s worth of storytelling, which resulted in 125 episodes, not one show disappointed like the Peacock film did. So, it seems only right that creator Andy Breckman would want to take one more crack at the character, if for no other reason… to end on a high note. And to get that bad taste out of everyone’s mouths. But when it comes to Monk’s return, the decision lies with Breckman. Shalhoub said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

You know, it’s not in my control. Really it’s up to the network, it’s up to Andy. It’s possible that we would revisit it. We’re hoping this one lands. I just don’t know how many times you can go to the well.

Shalhoub added:

On the other hand, I never say never.
