‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 Part Of DCU Canon Confirms James Gunn

Mar 11, 2024

By now, we know John Cena’s “Peacemaker” series is one of the few former DCEU projects going forward under James Gunn’s newly revamped DC Studios. Nearly all other relics of this era, Henry Cavill as Superman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, and Jason Momoa as Aquaman, are essentially canceled and very likely to be eventually rebooted. However, Gunn, the creator/writer/producer of “The Peacemaker” series, has recently revealed that the first season won’t be considered part of DCU canon.

His brief statement made on Threads confirms that this upcoming second season run of “Peacemaker” episodes will indeed be part of the new DCU (something that had been in question for a while now) and would suggest to us that his other DC Comics series, the “Waller” spinoff with Viola Davis reprising her villainous government character, will be treated similarly. How that actually works canonically, or even logically, other than forgetting the events of season one, is anyone’s guess. But it does sound a little messy.
Gunn also revealed that the new season of “Peacemaker” (which takes place after the events of “Superman”) will be shot alongside his “Superman,” movie, meaning he likely won’t be able to direct as many as he did with the first season. This admission isn’t all that shocking, given that Gunn has repeatedly stated that “Superman” would be his main focus. Formerly titled “Superman: Legacy,” the movie will be the first feature film installment as part of his new DCU. It’s worth mentioning that Gunn wasn’t the only filmmaker on the first run of episodes, and he shared that responsibility with Jody Hill, Brad Anderson, and Rosemary Rodriguez. Currently, it’s unclear who will be taking on those directing duties in “Peacemaker” season two.
“Yes, we’ll be shooting ‘Superman’ and ‘Peacemaker’ simultaneously. Yes, I’ve written all the episodes, but, no, in the interest of getting the show out there, I won’t be able to direct them all (only some),” Gunn said of juggling the two DCU productions on Threads.
“Peacemaker” was a direct spinoff of Gunn’s 2021 R-rated film “The Suicide Squad,” which focused on the morally ambiguous DC character Peacemaker, aka Christopher Smith, who nearly died after attempting to backstab his team on the orders of Amanda Waller to protect America’s dirty laundry from being exposed to the public. In the Max series, Peacemaker uncovers a conspiracy plot where an alien species called Butterflies are posing as humans in a lot to invade Earth.
“Peacemaker” will work alongside projects like “Superman,” “Creature Commandos,” “Supergirl: The Woman of Tomorrow,” “Swamp Thing,” “The Authority,” “The Brave & The Bold,” “Lanterns,” and more.
Considering “Peacemaker” will be shooting again in 2024, one presumes we won’t see it until 2025 on Max.
