Patty Jenkins Shares Candid View on Wonder Woman Movie in the DCU

Like so many other DCEU fixtures, including actors Henry Cavill and Ray Fisher, Wonder Woman filmmaker Patty Jenkins became a casualty of DC Studios’ emergence from within Warner Bros. Discovery. During a sit-down on the Turner Classic Movies and Max produced podcast, Talking Pictures, Jenkins revealed to host Ben Mankiewicz that new DCU bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran are “not interested” in pursuing more Wonder Woman films, at least, for the time being. When asked by Mankiewicz if Jenkins was done with Wonder Woman, she answered:

Yeah, for the time being. Yeah, but prob[ably]… easily forever. Easily forever, yeah.

Wonder Woman Release Date May 30, 2017 Director Patty Jenkins Runtime 141 Studio Warner Bros. Pictures Tagline Power. Grace. Wisdom. Wonder. Franchise DC

Mankiewicz then asked if someone else would be making a third Wonder Woman movie, and Jenkins responded by saying:

No, they’re not interested in doing any Wonder Woman for the next… time being […] James Gunn and Peter Safran have to follow their own heart into their own plans. So, I don’t know the ‘why.’

Jenkins seemed to have found a home at Warner Bros. Discovery with the Wonder Woman franchise. Gal Gadot’s first solo movie as the titular heroine arrived in 2017, a long 14 years after Jenkins’ previous big screen movie; the critically acclaimed and financially successful Monster. Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci’s crime drama delivered a huge $80 million box office against its $1.5 million budget, and saw Theron claiming a Best Actress Oscar for her performance in the movie. However, the success did not make Jenkins rush to get back behind the camera on another theatrical release until DC came calling.

James Gunn announced the production of the Paradise Lost television series back in January of 2023, which will focus on the inhabitants of Paradise Island, aka Themyscira (Diana Prince’s birthplace). However, while there are an array of rumors swirling about — everything from the DCU changing Wonder Woman’s DCEU origins to Elizabeth Debicki’s casting — Gunn himself has never officially said whether Diana will even show up in what is being called a prequel series.

When it comes to Jenkins’ biggest inspiration from the world of comic book heroes, Wonder Woman is not the character who influences her the most. That honor goes to the Man of Steel, and in particular, the 1978 release of Superman: The Movie. She explained:

“Superman changed my life. You know, I believe in the power of these movies. Seeing Superman a few months after my father died, and seeing him lose two fathers in the first act of the movie — and go on to be Superman. And I f—ing… that’s a movie I sobbed through as a kid […] I sobbed and sobbed and sobbed through that movie. And it had a profound influence on me, because I was Superman. I thought I was Superman; I could be Superman. I could find love; I could go on. So, it just rocked my world.”

Related Why DC’s Wonder Woman 84 Was Such a Massive Box Office Failure The sequel to Wonder Woman fell short of recapturing any of the success that the first film did in 2017. Its failure was due to a variety of factors.

At the time of this writing, Paradise Lost has not received an official release date. Meanwhile, the first movie in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU will take flight in theaters on July 11, 2025, when David Corenswet’s Man of Steel and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor come face to face in Superman.
