The Big Pelvis Reviews Film Threat

Mar 16, 2024

The Big Pelvis is a student film from writer-director Joseph Jeavons and co-written by Owen Swift (who also did the music). The short comedy centers on three fishermen who all set out to catch the unique fish of the title before their rival can. There’s the Cast Master (Joseph Jeavons), Bait Master (Jordan Mook), and Knot Master (Howard May), whose names portend their specialized skill sets.
The three fishermen are teenagers who use their skills to help each other out to catch “the big pelvis.” Their rival is Other Brad (Beckett Nichols), who is good enough to potentially catch the big pelvis by himself. While trying to catch the fish, Cast Master, Bait Master, and Knot Master scheme to keep Other Brad busy by sending Knot Master to keep him company.

“…three fishermen who all set out to catch the unique fish of the title before their rival…”
The Big Pelvis definitely took some inspiration from iconic films. For instance, Knot Master is a more over-the-top version of Bill Murray’s Caddyshack character. It isn’t just the bucket hat that gives this impression. He is very active with his mannerisms and facial expressions. The mimicry goes all the way to the unusual way he speaks, which gives off that Carl Spackler feel.
As a film critic for several years and a lover of film pretty much my whole life, I know that certain films aren’t for me. This one is one of them. Even with quirky characters, the comedy just wasn’t there. Many of the jokes flew over my head. I feel that this is made for a younger crowd than me. The Big Pelvis is a film that could hook the right people, but it could not reel me in.
