Netflix Renews Fantasy Series For 2 Seasons Ending With Season 5
Apr 18, 2024
Toss a coin to your witcher. Netflix has officially renewed its fantasy drama series “The Witcher” for seasons four and five, which will be its final two. The fourth season has just begun filming in the United Kingdom, with the fifth and final season being filmed immediately afterward.
These final two installments will cover Andrzej Sapkowski’s three remaining books in his “Witcher” series that the show is based on— “Baptism of Fire,” “The Tower of the Swallow,” and “Lady of the Lake.” Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich told Netflix that the team is “thrilled to be able to bring [Andrzej] Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.”

It’s also worth noting that you shouldn’t expect to see Henry Cavill reprise his role as the protagonist Geralt, with these last two seasons seeing Liam Hemsworth stepping into the shoes of the character.
Cavill announced last year that he would be leaving the show, stating, “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” Cavill wrote. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf.”
The new season follows Geralt, Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), and Ciri (Freya Allan) as they travel the war-torn Continent and its various demons while separated from one another following the startling, Continent-altering events that wrap up season three. They have a chance to survive the baptism of fire and reunite with one another if they can support and guide the groups of outcasts they end up in.
Legendary actor Laurence Fishburne is joining the cast this time around, playing the wise-cracking barber-surgeon Regis, who has a shadowy past. In Season Four, Regis—a beloved character from the Witcher books and video games—will meet Geralt. Fishburne expressed his excitement to Netflix, saying, “I’m very excited to be joining the cast and look forward to exploring the wondrous world of The Witcher.”
“Watchmen” star Danny Woodburn is also joining as Zoltan, the beloved dwarf from the books and video games, while “District 9” actor Sharlto Copley stars as the notorious bounty hunter Leo Bonhart. James Purefoy from “The Following” will play Skellen, Emhyr’s court advisor and senior spy.
Geralt takes a side after realizing that being politically neutral is untenable following the events of season three.
“His side is Ciri and Yen, and he will do anything ,” Schmidt Hissrich told Tudum this week, explaining why Geralt fights off the corrupt soldiers in the finale as he heads to find Ciri. “He will get involved in anything he has to get into in order to make that happen.”
Directors on season four include Sergio Mimica-Gezzan, Tricia Brock, Alex Garcia Lopez and Jeremy Webb. With “The Witcher” going into production now, given the expansiveness and VFX on the show, presumably the fourth season won’t debut until sometime in 2025, but who knows, TV often works fast. Watch the season three trailer in the interim.
