Marvel Boss Explains Why Marvel Television Banner Return Means a Big Change to MCU’s Future
May 20, 2024
Summary
Marvel Television is back to help Marvel be more accessible to fans, eliminating the need to watch everything in the MCU.
Multiple banners like Marvel Studios and Marvel Television will be used to make the franchise easier to navigate.
Upcoming Marvel Television projects like
Daredevil: Born Again
and
Ironheart
are set to hit screens in 2025.
Marvel Television has been resurrected, several years after the disbanding of the standalone banner that brought Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Defenders Saga to the world. The return of the old banner is something that Marvel exec Brad Winderbaum has explained is to help the franchise dispel the belief that fans need to watch everything in the MCU to be able to enjoy anything.
The Defenders (2017) Release Date August 18, 2017 Seasons 1 Studio ABC Signature, Goddard Textiles, Marvel Television Streaming Service(s) Disney+
While Marvel Studios has been back in the TV game for more than three years, Disney+ shows like WandaVision, Loki, and Moon Knight have continued to be released under the regular Marvel Studios banner. But that will not necessarily be the case going forward with upcoming projects once again falling under Marvel Television instead. While it has been revealed that Marvel will be reducing the volume of movies and TV shows it puts out each year, Winderbaum explained that the introduction of multiple banners is a way of making the franchise more accessible. He told ComicBook.com:
“We want to make sure that Marvel stays an open door for people to come in and explore. On the heels of Endgame, I think there was, maybe, a little bit of an obligation to watch absolutely everything in order to watch anything. As you know, as a comics fan, they’re designed to just pop in, find something that you like, and use that to enter you into the universe, and then you can explore and weave around based on your own preferences. So part of the rebranding of Marvel Studios, Marvel Television, Marvel Animation, even Marvel Spotlight is to, I think, try to tell the audience, ‘You can jump in anywhere. They’re interconnected but they’re not.’”
You don’t have to watch A to enjoy B. You can follow your bliss. You can follow your own preferences and find the thing you want within the tapestry of Marvel.
Marvel Television Has Some Big Shows on the Horizon
While the output of Marvel Studios has been under a lot of scrutiny recently, with the MCU franchise delivering some disappointing results in both audience reactions and box office grosses, there are many more projects looking to put that right in the near future. Deadpool & Wolverine is the only theatrical release from the studio this year, and over on Disney+ there has also been a large pullback in the upcoming slate of TV shows being released this year.
However, during Disney’s Upfronts last week, release windows for several new series were announced, kicking off with WandaVision spin-off Agatha All Along. The Kathryn Hahn-led show will see the return of the popular witch, and comes with an ensemble cast including Aubrey Plaza, Deborah Jo Rupp, Patti LuPone, Joe Locke, and Emma Caulfield. It was revealed this week that the series will make its debut on September 18 with a double episode, and will be the next live-action series to hit the Disney+ platform.

During the same event, it was officially confirmed that 2025 will see the release of Daredevil: Born Again and the long-delayed Ironheart series. It seems that all of these projects will now appear under the Marvel Television banner, although what that means for the interconnectivity of the shows themselves is yet to be seen.
