Anthony Starr Shoots Down Booster Gold Fancasting Rumors & Says He’s Likely Done With Superheroes After ‘The Boys’

Jul 12, 2024

Prime Video’s superhero satire “The Boys” is in its fourth season and preparing for a fifth and final season. But unlike some shows that go on for too long and overstay their welcome, “The Boys” is getting better and better, and our recent review described it as “confident” and its strongest season yet. With season four airing week to week, its eighth and final episode premiering on July 18, next week, the cast and one of its primary leads, Anthony Starr, have been hitting the pavement hard to promote the show.
And in a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Starr shot down any rumors, fan castings, and dreams of him playing DC Studios “Booster Gold,” a series that’s already in the works from DC’s James Gunn and Peter Safran. In fact, after playing a villainous Trumper-like superhero for five years with at least one more to go, the Australian actor who is 48 says he’s done with superheroes after “The Boys” and says he’s “too old” to continue with that racket.

Asked about the Booster Gold noise online, Starr seemed genuinely unaware of who the character was. “Booster Gold. What does he do?” Starr said. “No, tell me. I genuinely don’t [know]. I’m a little slow.”
Happy Sad Confused explained that Starr is often suggested for the role by fans who have been petitioning James Gunn online for the actor to take the role, but he seemed unimpressed by the why of it all. Does he got blonde hair? How, how did you come up with that? You really dug deep for that one,” he quipped.
“I’m getting old, and my body doesn’t want to do much action anymore,” Starr continued. I want to sit and go, ‘Hey, you can’t do that stuff.’ I want to sit behind a desk on a CSI show [Laughs].”
Booster Gold is a DC character who is a loser and criminal who uses basic technology from the future and time travel to pretend to be a superhero in the past, aka the present day of DC. The character in the comics is morally bankrupt, at least at first, and uses his powers to fight crime in the 20th century, but he also to become rich and famous in the process.
In the previous era of DC, producer/director Greg Berlanti was developing a Booster Gold movie, but that plan was soon scrapped when Gunn took over DC Studios and decided to put the character in a TV series.
Production Weekly recently reported that “Booster Gold” would be shooting this summer, but James Gunn recently shot that report down on social media.
“Booster Gold” is rumored to have already cast its lead and found its showrunners—comedian Danny McBride and the “Righteous Gemstones” are rumored to be running the series), but nothing has been officially announced yet. And given there’s very little DC presence at San Diego Comic-Con in two weeks other than “Creature Commandos,” it’s unlikely that the news will be revealed at that fan confab.
