Best Supporting Actress Oscars 2023 Predictions And Contenders

Jan 31, 2023

There are a lot of interesting races this awards season, but the Supporting Actress (and Supporting Actor for that mattter) field is practically wide open. There are very few givens although many are assuming “Everything Everywhere All At Once’s Stephanie Hsu and at least one of the “Women Talking” ensemble make the cut. Beyond that? It’s going to likely be a fight to the finish.

If “Everything Everywhere” truly resonates with The Academy, it’s more than possible that Jamie Lee Curtis lands also lands a nod. Kerry Condon is the secret sauce of “The Banshees of Inisherin” and should be a fixture at awards events to come. Industry favorite and recent Emmy and SAG Award winner Jean Smart could also earn her first Oscar recognition for “Babylon” (a film still unseen at publication). And “The Whale,” which will likely be polarizing to many AMPAS members, has worthy performances from Hong Chau and Sadie Sink to consider. If they can hit the circuit, “The Woman King’s” Thuso Mbedu has a shot as does a previous nominee, “The Son’s” Vanessa Kirby. And if “Triangle of Sadness” has staying power, Dolly De Leon is certainly worthy of a nomination.
But, at this point in the season, many of those contenders have a puncher’s chance, at best. That may open the door for “Armageddon Time’s” Anne Hathaway, “TAR’s” Nina Hoss or even “The Inspection’s” Gabrielle Union. Maybe. But this category deserves a “watch this space” sign more than any other this season. [Posted Oct. 7]
