At first, Amelia doesn’t believe her son Sam when he says The Babadook is real. But then she begins experiencing terrifying visions, We won’t spoil what happens next, but you may want to sleep with the light on after watching this movie.

Annabelle (2014)

A still from Annabelle, Warner Bros.

This 2014 horror movie directed by John R. Leonetti explains the story of Annabelle, the cursed, haunted, and possessed doll featured in The Conjuring. When a husband buys Annabelle for his pregnant wife, he thinks it’s a great present — until occult worshippers break into their home and attack them, dripping blood onto Annabelle.

The first time I saw The Conjuring I was with my dad, who overheard a man exiting the theater and muttering to himself, “I’m all set with that doll.”

All I could think was: So true, sir. So true.

The Deliverance (2024)

Glenn Close in The Deliverance, Netflix

This new horror movie from Lee Daniels features Glenn Close in the very interesting role of Alberta, a grandmother whose cancer treatment is putting her alcoholic daughter, Ebony (Andra Day) into debt.

But that’s just the beginning of their family’s problems. After they move into a new house, it becomes clear that there is a demonic presence in the house. They begin to believe that the house may be a gateway to hell.

The cast also includes Mo’nique, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Anthony B. Jenkins, Caleb McLaughlin, Omar Epps, and Demi Singleton.

The Silence (2019)

Stanely Tucci and Kiernan Shipka in The Silence

Starring Stanley Tucci and Kiernan Shipka, this disaster movie follows a family who find themselves being stalked by awful, flying creatures that hunt using sound. News broadcast warn people to stay inside and not to interact with the creatures, but when the family is trapped on the road, they have no choice but to face them.

Among them is a young girl whose senses are heightened by her loss of hearing — but there’s a cult who’d like to take advantage of her abilities.

His House (2020)

One of the most terrifying films on this list. Directed by Remi Weekes, His House stars Wunmi Mosaku and Sope Dirisu as a pair of refugees from South Sudan who get assigned to live in a very creepy, rundown house in rural England.

There are definitely secrets lurking behind those walls, and not the fun kind. His House also stars Matt Smith as the incredulous government agency worker who shows the couple their new home. This 2020 horror movie has got jump scares galore.

Pearl (2022)

Mia Goth in Pearl, A24

Technically, Pearl is the second installment in Ti West’s X trilogy, but its events are at the begin of the timeline’s chronological order. It follows Mia Goth as Pearl, a farm girl who has to live with her strict German parents while her husband is away fighting in World War I.

But something isn’t right about Pearl, and everyone seems to understand why except for her. When her only dream of becoming a dancer is shattered, Pearl resorts to violent bouts of jealous rage aimed at anyone who has the misfortune of being in her path.

Come for Mia Goth’s incredible performance, stay for the Maggot-infested pig, the axe-wielding, and the alligator.

Run Rabbit Run (2023)

Sarah Snook in Run Rabbit Run. Netflix.

Succession actress Sarah Snook stars in Run Rabbit Run as a fertility doctor, also named Sarah, who begins to notice unsettling behavior from her 7 year old daughter.

The little girl believes that she is Sarah’s missing sister, Alice, who disappeared when she, too, was 7 years old.

There’s a lot of creepy stuff that happens with pet bunny rabbits, so be warned.

The Pope’s Exorcist (2023)

Russell Crowe in The Pope’s Exorcist

Russell Crow stars in The Pope’s Excorcist as Father Gabriele Amorth, a character based on a real priest who performed exorcisms.

Amorth must face demons who possess children and maybe even Satan himself in this horrifying, dramatic thriller set in the Vatican.

In the Tall Grass (2019)

Harrison Gilbertson in In The Tall Grass

Based on the book by Stephen King and Joe Hill, In The Tall Grass follows a group of people who get lost, one by one, in a field of — you guessed it — very tall grass and find it extremely difficult to find their way out.

Time starts to slip away and things are not as they seem in this mysterious place.
