Harrison Ford Says It’s ‘Silly’ for Actors to Avoid Marvel Roles

Oct 22, 2024

Being no stranger to franchises himself, Harrison Ford doesn’t agree with actors who avoid Marvel roles for the sake of avoiding them. Ford rose to stardom thanks to his role in Star Wars, and lest you forget, he’s the headliner of the Indiana Jones franchise. Through it all, he still appeared in non-franchise movies, and he doesn’t see any reason why actors can’t do both.

In an interview with GQ, Ford was asked about actors who turn down roles in the MCU, something Ford is now part of after taking over the role of Thaddeus Ross from William Hurt. Ford said actors need to understand things are changing, and there’s no sense moping about how things used to be.

“I mean, this is the Marvel universe and I’m just there on a weekend pass. I’m a sailor new to this town,” Ford said about his MCU debut. “I understand the appeal of other kinds of films besides the kind we made in the ’80s and ’90s. I don’t have anything general to say about it. It’s the condition our condition is in, and things change and morph and go on. We’re silly if we sit around regretting the change and don’t participate. I’m participating in a new part of the business that, for me at least, I think is really producing some good experiences for an audience. I enjoy that.”

If Ford truly considers this to just be a “weekend pass,” then he’s making the most of it because he’s going to be in two films. He makes his first appearance as Ross in Captain America: Brave New World, where audiences can also see the MCU debut of Red Hulk. Ford is following it up with an appearance in Thunderbolts. Both movies release in 2025, so he’ll be on a lot of screens next year. As of right now, there’s no telling when we might see him pop up in the MCU again.

The MCU Is Looking To Get Back on Track

It’s no secret this latest phase of the MCU has been rough. The Marvels, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and Secret Invasion all came in well under expectations, and it forced Marvel to redirect. Instead of flooding the market with movies and TV shows, they cut back on output, and so far, so good. Deadpool & Wolverine became the highest-grossing R-rated film ever as it cruised past the billion-dollar mark.

Agatha All Along, a spin-off of Wandavision, has been a hit with fans, and it could end up having big lore implications for the universe as a whole. Agatha and Echo, a show that dropped all its episodes at once on Disney+ to kick off 2024, are the only new Marvel titles to premiere on Disney+ this year. Instead of oversaturating audiences with what many have deemed as homework, the staggered releases have made it more fun to watch Marvel projects, and that could prove to be great news for fans looking to get excited about the universe again. Both the X-Men and Fantastic Four are coming down the line, so fans have that to look forward to as well.
