Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar Gets Emotional Reflection From Anne Hathaway For 10th Anniversary
Oct 27, 2024
As the filmmaker begins putting together his next movie, Anne Hathaway shares an emotional reflection on Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar for its 10th anniversary. The 2014 sci-fi drama marked Hathaway’s second collaboration with Nolan, with the duo having just come off of The Dark Knight Rises two years prior, in which she portrayed Selina Kyle/Catwoman. The Oscar-winner starred in the Interstellar cast as Dr. Amelia Brand, a NASA scientist tasked with colonizing a new planet as humanity faces extinction on Earth from a global blight.
While there is still just over a week left until the milestone for the movie’s original 2014 release, Anne Hathaway has taken to her Instagram with an emotional post reflecting on Interstellar’s 10th anniversary. The post, which features the video of the film’s ending in which Brand safely makes it to a hospitable new planet, begins with a quote from her character in which she discusses the transcendent nature of love, explaining that it should be trusted love will always exist beyond time and space, “even if we can’t understand it.”
Hathaway would go on to share how her “oceanic love” for Interstellar has grown “more and more dimensional” in the decade since the movie came out, calling it “one of the honors of my life” for Nolan to have invited her to play Brand. The Oscar winner would conclude her post by also sharing her love for late producer Lynda Obst, as it was the final movie she produced before passing away on October 22. Check out Hathaway’s post below:
What Interstellar Meant For Hathaway’s Career
She’s Been Candid About The Movie Saving Her Career In The Past
Interestingly, this is not only the first time Hathaway has expressed her love for Interstellar since the movie released, but is also her second time sharing an emotional reflection on it this year. The Oscar winner previously explained that she wasn’t able to get roles around the time of the sci-fi movie’s production as her identity had become toxic online. She ultimately cited Nolan’s support as allowing her career to “not lose momentum the way it could have” had she not been cast in the film.
Considering how successful of a star she was around the time of the movie, having just come off of her Oscar win in Les Misérables, it may come as something of a surprise to hear she felt her career was about to go downhill prior to Interstellar. However, the toxic online identity she refers to came about because of the awards season run for the 2012 musical adaptation, with her reported method acting and behavior during the ceremonies drawing criticisms of her being too “prim” or unreasonable.

Regardless of how she was viewed during Les Misérables’ awards run, Nolan’s support of Hathaway ultimately proved beneficial for the star moving forward. Though there was a period of time in which she saw a fluctuation of responses to her projects, including her reunion with Interstellar co-star Matthew McConaughey on the thriller Serenity, she has more recently found acclaim with the likes of The Idea of You. Having also lined up roles in David Lowery’s Mother Mary, David Robert Mitchell’s Flowervale Street and the long-awaited The Princess Diaries 3, it’s also clear this resurgence is only just getting started.
Our Take On Hathaway’s Interstellar Role
A Dreadfully Underrated Movie & Performance
While both may be considered some of the more iconic creatives in modern cinema, I often find that Hathaway’s performance in Nolan’s Interstellar is generally far too overlooked, along with the film itself. Taking a page out of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey playbook, Nolan made a truly thought-provoking and unpredictable sci-fi epic, while Hathaway infused such a beautiful balance of compassion and dedication into Brand. Though it seems highly unlikely the two will reteam for an Interstellar 2, one can hope that Hathaway and Nolan reunite for one of his projects in the future.
