James Gunn Teases His Next DCU Movie Following ‘Superman’

Nov 21, 2024

James Gunn hasn’t even released the first trailer for Superman: Legacy yet, (let alone the entire film) but he’s already looking ahead to his next DCU movie. It’s safe to say that Gunn is one of the busiest people in Hollywood at the moment. In addition to writing the scripts for the upcoming Creature Commandos series, as well as writing and directing Superman starring David Corenswet, Gunn is also the co-president of DC Studios with Peter Safran, and is in charge of orchestrating the entire DC Universe. While we’re all waiting to see Gunn’s interpretation of Superman, overly-eager DC fans are already asking, “what’s next?”

Speaking to Collider, Gunn addressed his DC future and teased what’s in store post-Superman. And while he didn’t directly reveal what his next movie would be, he teased that there are several projects he could choose from. “I haven’t,” was Gunn’s simple answer when asked if he’d nailed down his next project. Gunn said he’s going to bounce between four speculative projects to see which one works best for him and within the wider context of the DCU. He continued:

“I’ve got like four different things that I could do, and I’m going to kind of jump back and forth between those things. I’m going to see which one really speaks to me, and that’s the one I’m gonna do.”

James Gunn is currently in charge of three upcoming DCU projects, alongside overseeing the entire franchise. In addition to Creature Commandos and Superman, Gunn is also bringing John Cena’s Peacemaker into the DCU fold. Season one wasn’t canon to the new DCU, but Gunn has confirmed that season two will take place firmly within the rebooted universe.

Not Every DCU Project Will Be Completed

DC Studios have announced several new projects alongside the initial slate that was confirmed to be in development in 2023. The latest update includes an animated Dick Grayson/Jason Todd film, a Deathstroke/Bane crossover movie (James Gunn really likes crossovers), and a Teen Titans movie (finally!). But, not every announced project will make it to the big or small screen.

Related James Gunn Is Developing Multiple R-Rated DC Movies Gunn confirms he won’t hold back on telling R-rated stories.

But it’s important to note the difference between phases. The projects in the DCU’s Gods & Monsters phase are confirmed to be in “development” — not “production.” This means that writers and filmmakers are pitching their ideas to Gunn and DC Studios (this is the development phase). If they like an idea, the project will then move into pre-production and later production with the hopes of it being completed for our viewing pleasure.

However, James Gunn has made it clear that DC Studios won’t be releasing sub-par work just because they’ve announced a project. “One thing that I’ve tried to make clear to people from the beginning […] is that everything in DC is going to be based on the writers,” Gunn said during the conversation. He continued, explaining that every upcoming DCU project is dependent on a good script before it is moved into pre-production:

“Until we have a screenplay that I’m totally happy with, that movie is not going to get made, no matter what it is.”

Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.’ rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, honoring the character’s roots as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way.”Release Date July 11, 2025 Cast David Corenswet , Rachel Brosnahan , María Gabriela De Faría , Edi Gathegi , Nicholas Hoult , Frank Grillo , Nathan Fillion , Milly Alcock , Sara Sampaio , Pruitt Taylor Vince , Skyler Gisondo , Anthony Carrigan , Wendell Pierce , Beck Bennett , Sean Gunn Expand
