DCU’s Live-Action ‘Waller’ Series Gets Promising Development Update
Nov 29, 2024
While James Gunn prepares to launch the DCU with Creature Commandos this December, Superman next July, and a whole host of other upcoming projects, one of DC Studios’ forgotten shows just got a big update. Creature Commandos brings Viola Davis’ terrifying Amanda Waller into the rebooted cinematic universe from the old DCEU. Waller is confirmed to appear in several upcoming projects, and is believed to appear in Season 2 of Peacemaker. But, Gunn has already given the character her own series.
Speaking to Screen Rant, Creature Commandos star, Steve Agee, gave fans a much-needed update on the live-action Waller series. “I think they’re still doing scripts,” the actor said. Agee played John Economos in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, and Season 1 of Peacemaker, and is set to return in Creature Commandos. Economos worked closely with Waller on Task Force X, and is believed to appear in the live-action Waller series, due to their close working relationship.
This is the first update DC fans have been given about the Waller series since it was first announced back in early 2023. The show was unintentionally lost and buried among the numerous updates announced by James Gunn and DC Studios for the upcoming “Gods & Monsters” phase. As good as the update is, we’re still left without a timeframe for the Waller series. Agee continued:
“So there’s no set time yet, and James [Gunn] won’t start something until he’s absolutely happy with the scripts and they’re ready to go. So once they’re ready, I’m sure he’ll announce a start time — as an actor who loves to work, it can’t happen soon enough, though, for me!”
A ‘Waller’ Series Could Be Perfect for the DCU
Unlike the MCU which has a distinctly light palette, or Zack Snyder’s DCEU which turned every superhero into dark, edgy killing machines (maybe the DCEU wasn’t that good in hindsight), Gunn and Safran’s DC Universe doesn’t appear to have a singular style. The upcoming slate of movies and shows features an eclectic range of characters and filmmakers, who will all bring something different to their projects. Gunn’s own Superman will be vastly different from the upcoming Swamp Thing horror movie, for example.

While Gunn’s DCU is embracing the more fantastical heroes and villains, Waller is exactly what the universe needs to feel grounded. Despite being one of the villains in The Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller’s violently methodical ethos was somewhat lost under the film’s comedic overtones. A standalone series, in partnership with HBO, no less, would allow the character’s brutal nature to shine.
Fans should be even more excited for Waller following the tremendous success of The Penguin. The hit HBO series (set in Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe) told the kind of dark and bloody story that Waller desperately deserves. Very little is known about Waller. Viola Davis is expected (although not confirmed) to return for the show. The Oscar-winning actress will already be a part of the DCU in Creature Commandos, and given her status in DC Comics lore, will likely play a large role in the upcoming DC Universe.
