‘Yellowstone’s Gil Birmingham Calls Season 5 Finale “Beautifully Written”

Dec 16, 2024

Yellowstone star Gil Birmingham touts Season 5’s final episode as having been “beautifully written.” Birmingham’s fan-favorite character, Thomas Rainwater, seems to be scheming with the Dutton’s to save the ranch and all of its majestic land in what could very well be the swan song for creators Taylor Sheridan and John Linson’s acclaimed episodic drama. However, regardless of what happens, the actor appears to be quite content with the “great ride” the season’s storyline turns out to be. Birmingham said in an interview with TVLine:

“I guess I always say it’s not so much the destination as it is the journey. That’s what makes Taylor’s [Sheridan] shows so dramatically compelling. It’s the ins and outs, the twists and turns that make it interesting. Once you’re to the destination, then whatever’s happened – happened. But what was the experience emotionally, psychologically, spiritually speaking for the individuals involved in that? I think that’s why Yellowstone is such a great ride for our fans.”

Despite Birmingham’s words of encouragement, fans are still wondering whether Season 5 will actually mark the end for the neo-Western, considering the bewildering bomb that was dropped at the conclusion of the last episode, “Give the World Away.” Rather than teasing the “series” finale, a voiceover, followed by sneak-peek footage, declared that Sunday’s (Dec. 15) episode would be the “season” finale, instead. So, will Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) actually pay for his heart-wrenching portrayal, or will the fandom have to wait for an unconfirmed Season 6 to see him get his comeuppance?
Wes Bentley “Can’t Wait” to See Reactions to the Final Episode of ‘Yellowstone’ Season 5

Yellowstone Season 5B proved it didn’t need Kevin Costner, at least where the ratings were concerned. But the fans are bloodthirsty to finally see Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) pay the price for having egregiously betrayed his father, John (Costner), which led to the murder of the Dutton family patriarch. The neo-Western’s co-star, Bentley, is also excited about the final episode of Season 5, particularly where the fans’ reactions are concerned, as the actor revealed by saying in the same interview:

“I can’t wait to see what the viewers think. I’ve leaned heavily on viewers to understand their experience with the show, because it’s very different than my experience with the show. Playing the role, I couldn’t keep up with watching the show while we were shooting it, and eventually I decided I kind of like this: not knowing how I look on camera or how this is playing or what edit they used. I leaned into the depths of the character. And it seemed to be working, so I’ve been turning to the audience to [find out] how they feel about things. I’m excited to see how they’ll feel about how 5B wraps up.”

Yellowstone Star & Long-Time Taylor Sheridan Friend Gil Birmingham Comments on Season 5

Gil Birmingham & Taylor Sheridan have collaborated many times, and shares where Yellowstone and his character Thomas Rainwater are headed in Season 5.

Whether it’s the series or season finale, the final episode of Yellowstone Season 5, which is titled “Life Is a Promise,” airs Sunday, Dec. 15, at 8 p.m. EST/PST on the Paramount Network. It seems a shame to think that Taylor Sheridan and John Linson’s show will actually be put out to pasture, especially considering the record-breaking viewership Yellowstone Season 5 has enjoyed during its last six episodes. One thing is for sure, though, fans would love to see Beth (Kelly Reilly), Kayce (Luke Grimes), and Rip (Cole Hauser) forcibly drop Jamie off at the infamous train station to settle the score.

Yellowstone stars Kevin Costner and centers on his character John Dutton. Dutton and his family live on a cattle ranch just a few hours away from Yellowstone National Park. The series chronicles the family’s struggle to defend their home from an Indian reservation and land developers. As if their life wasn’t complicated enough, the Duttons also have medical issues, political aspirations, and family secrets stacked against them.
