‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ Trailer Divides Marvel Fans
Dec 31, 2024
Spider-Man is getting a new look for his upcoming Disney+ animated series, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. As with most comic book adaptations (and Disney projects in general), fans are deeply divided on whether they approve of the web-slinger’s upcoming show. While certain producers (e.g., Sony) blame negative press and critic reviews for fan backlash, the fans can speak for themselves, and boy are they talking about this new trailer. Fans are being extremely vocal in the comments on Marvel Studios’ post about the trailer, either loving or hating the new version of the classic hero.
Disney is taking some risks in its next re-telling of Spidey’s story, and some fans are clinging to the classic iteration as if their lives depended on it. Many are pointing to the race-swap of the Osborne family as a reason to hate the upcoming series, but fans that aren’t as sensitive to characters switching skin tones are excited to see the new take on the classic characters. The animated series also has a unique (or, as some say, motion-sickness-inducing) style that can be hard to get used to if you’re accustomed to the older styles of Spider-Man cartoons.
“Are you supposed to be getting motion sickness watching this? I’m not a fan of this style of cell-shaded cgi.” – @MotelAndRVPark
While the art style can look like it’s been ripped from a comic book page at times, some fans are concerned that the animation style is playing it safe in its execution instead of taking bold risks to set its style apart from the animation that came before it. Disney isn’t exactly known as a studio that takes big swings, so other fans have learned to check their expectations.
“This animation is not very dynamic. Feels very safe. It’s mainly the camera movement. Odd composition” – @VFXCentral
“Why does Peter have to come across like a complete idiot? What made Stan’s Spider-Man so special were Peter Parker’s personal struggles, which he could momentarily forget as Spider-Man with his quick wit and humor. Here, everything feels like one big joke, created by people who clearly will never understand the character and probably haven’t even read the old comics. Nonsense. But hey, it’s from Disney+, so I guess we couldn’t have expected anything different.” – @ChrisNoeth

It’s Impossible To Please Everyone, Especially Superhero Fans
Marvel fans are notoriously hard to please, so take their comments about the unreleased series with a grain of salt. While a loud group of fans seem to be displeased one way or another by the new trailer, there are some Spider-Man fans that are simply happy to see a new Spider-Man animated show for kids to enjoy like they once did.
“I still remember watching Spider-Man cartoons every Saturday morning, and knowing an entirely new generation gets to experience that same magic just made my whole year.” – @pattherogue
Whether you love it or hate it, there will be no shortage of Spider-Man content in the future, with a third Spider-Verse movie on the way and Marvel’s untitled fourth Spider-Man film set to be released on July 24, 2026.
