‘Creature Commandos’ Reveals the DCU Batman Again in New Episode
Jan 12, 2025
Creature Commandos, the first project from James Gunn’s DCU, has once again highlighted the new version of the Batman. In a previous episode of the animated DC series, a faint silhouette was shown of the Dark Knight, but it was tough to make out any specific details (and whether it was a previous iteration of Batman). Now, it’s been confirmed in this week’s episode of Creature Commandos that not only will the DCU introduce an entirely different version of the superhero, its Batman might be quite different from Robert Pattinson’s version in several key ways.
In episode 6 of Creature Commandos, Gotham City is shown for the first time in a flashback that sees Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk) looking to rise to the top of the criminal underworld. But just as Phosphorus believes he’s made it, Batman himself appears to put him behind bars. Although it’s another brief look at the Caped Crusader (see below), there is no mistaking that it’s not a version of the Batman audiences have seen before on the big screen. Details are still hidden in shadow, but it’s made known that this is a chunkier, beefed-up version of the character with a comic-accurate suit design. If you close one eye, he kind of looks like Ben Affleck’s Batman, but DC Studios has already confirmed the obvious.
During an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Gunn officially addressed introducing Batman in Creature Commandos. While he confirmed that this is the DCU Batman (and not Pattinson or Affleck), he also teased his future in the new cinematic universe and revealed Superman and Batman will be teaming up at some point.
“This is the DCU Batman… listen, I gotta tell you, I just love Batman, I love him! I’ve loved him since I was a little kid. He’s one of my favorite characters, I have gone on the record in the past when I was at Marvel saying, ‘My favorite character is Batman, I love him.’ We’re going to do great things with him, he’s the most popular superhero in the world and I can’t wait for people to see more of him, along with Superman and together.”
James Gunn Won’t Commit to Batman Design in ‘Creature Commandos’
Although this week’s Creature Commandos gave fans a clearer look at Batman, it originally was a more revealing sequence. Gunn told Rotten Tomatoes that when he was first shown the episode, the Batman cameo was not as hidden in the darkness as it is in the final version. The filmmaker-turned-executive said he was not quite ready to commit to unveiling exactly what the DCU’s iteration of the Caped Crusader would look like ahead of his live-action debut. That said, it’s still safe to say Batman will still appear relatively similar to his Creature Commandos counterpart.
“When they first showed the episode to me, there was a lot more Batman. And I said, ‘I’m not ready to commit to that… more silhouette!’”

‘The Batman Part II’ might have a new title, too.
Batman is expected to make his official DCU debut in The Brave and the Bold, which has recently faced some delays as of late. Nevertheless, it’s been made clear that Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2 won’t form part of the DC Universe, although Gunn and DC Studios co-head Peter Safran will still have a hand in the Elseworlds version of the Dark Knight. This makes sense, as the DCU has already proven to be a far more fantastical world than the one Pattinson’s character resides in. In addition to The Brave and the Bold, classic Batman villain Clayface is getting his own solo film from horror maestro Mike Flanagan after first appearing in Creature Commandos last month.
