Brave New World’ Runtime Makes It One of the MCU’s Shortest Films
Jan 19, 2025
The runtime for Captain America: Brave New World may have been revealed, and it could be a cause of concern for some fans. Marvel Studios hopes the fourth film in the Captain America franchise, and 35th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will continue the momentum of Deadpool & Wolverine and get the Multiverse Saga back on track.
Set for a Valentine’s Day opening that will play into President’s Day, the movie is looking at a respectable opening weekend. As fans wait for tickets to go on sale, conflicting reports about the runtime have been revealed, but both hint at a short MCU entry.
AMC Theaters have listed the runtime of Captain America: Brave New World at 1 hour and 58 minutes, or 118 minutes. AMC Theaters, the largest movie theater chain in the United States and the world, has likely put up the runtime ahead of the film tickets going on sale, which is expected to be very soon. However, Marvel Studios and Disney have not officially confirmed the runtime for Captain America: Brave New World. It is worth noting that Regal Cinema and Harkins Theaters have the movie listed at 2 hours. Cinemark, the second-largest movie theater in the United States, has no runtime listed.
If AMC’s runtime is to be believed, Captain America: Brave New World would tie with Ant-Man and the Wasp as the seventh short MCU film. If Regal Cinema and Harkins time is true, those extra two minutes make it the ninth shortest MCU movie, just narrowly beating Thor: Love and Thunder by one minute.
Regardless of which showtime is true, both mean that Captain America: Brave New World is also the shortest Captain America movie. It beats Captain America: The First Avenger at 2 hours and 4 minutes (124 minutes), Captain America: The Winter Soldier at 2 hours and 16 minutes (136 minutes), and Captain America: Civil War at 2 hours and 27 minutes (147 minutes).
Does the Shorter Runtime Hint at a Troubled Production?
Captain America: Brave New World’s shorter runtime, coupled with the months-long rumors of production troubles and poor test screenings resulting in multiple reshoots (as recently as fall 2024) and delays in its release, are all certainly alarming.
It raises concerns similar to 2023’s The Marvels, which is the shortest MCU movie to date, as another MCU film spinning off from the events of a Disney+ series that seemingly underwent a great deal of behind-the-scenes issues and was edited to pieces to salvage the project. The Marvels turned into the first box office bomb of the MCU. Many of the shortest MCU movies, like Thor: The Dark World and The Incredible Hulk, also had behind-the-scenes issues and were drastically reworked in the editing process.

However, runtime is not imperative to a movie’s quality. One of the MCU’s most beloved films is Doctor Strange, the MCU’s fifth shortest film. That movie was a hit with critics and general audiences, earning 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and $677 million worldwide. In contrast, Eternals is the third longest MCU movie at 2 hours and 36 minutes, but it was the first film in the franchise to get a rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes, with 47%. Despite pulling in an impressive $402 million worldwide at a time when audiences were still skeptical about returning to the movies following the COVID-19 pandemic, it is labeled as one of the MCU’s biggest failures, and plans for a sequel have seemingly been canceled.
The fate of Captain America: Brave New World has yet to be determined. While many movie fans might be concerned about behind-the-scenes rumors, most general audiences likely aren’t aware of or even concerned about its runtime. What matters is if it can deliver an entertaining movie in the time it is given.
Captain America: Brave New World (formerly titled New World Order) marks Sam Wilson’s first MCU big-screen appearance as Steve Rogers’ successor after receiving the suit and shield in Phase 4’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Anthony Mackie returns as the titular Avenger alongside Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres, Carl Lumby as Isaiah Bradley, and Tim Blake Nelson as The Incredible Hulk’s former ally Samuel Sterns. Harrison Ford makes his MCU debut replacing the late William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross.
