‘Outlander’ Season 7’s Cliffhanger Ending, Explained

Jan 28, 2025

As heartbreaking as it is to say, Outlander Season 7 has officially come to an end. While the latest season of one of the best historical fantasy drama series ever was split into two parts and airing weekly on Starz, with the first six seasons of Outlander available to stream on Netflix, January 17 brought the Outlander Season 7 finale, and it was far from what was expected.
Outlander, which is based on Diana Gabaldon’s book series of the same name, is surely known for coming up with shocking twists and turns which even leave avid readers gasping in surprise. However, episode 16, “A Hundred Thousand Angels,” just concluded Season 7 with a massive cliffhanger, which caused understandable confusion and the unbearable urge to find out what it means for the future. Without further ado, let’s take a look at Outlander’s shocking cliffhanger.

Who Is Faith in ‘Outlander’?

Known by arguably every Outlander fan, Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitríona Balfe) have a daughter named Brianna (Sophie Skelton), who was the reason why Claire traveled back to her own time in order to ensure Brianna’s safety. Clearly, Claire and Jamie are one of those endgame couples in Outlander, because Claire left Brianna behind and returned to find Jamie. Brianna isn’t the couple’s only child though, because a couple of years before becoming pregnant with her, Claire and Jamie were already expecting a child.
During their time in France in Season 2 of Outlander, Claire is sent to the L’Hopital des Anges, after having complications with her pregnancy. Once she woke up there, she found out that her daughter, who she called Faith, was stillborn. Since Jamie couldn’t be with her due to being arrested after a duel, Claire’s friend, a powerful healer named Master Raymond (Dominique Pinon), remained by her side during the tragedy and helped her. Upon Jamie’s release, the two held a funeral for Faith, after leaving the pain and France behind and returning to Scotland.

The Shocking Cliffhanger in the ‘Outlander’ Season 7 Finale

In Season 7 Part 2 of Outlander, William (Charles Vandervaart) finds himself in a brothel after being completely shaken by the revelation that Jamie is his biological father. There he meets Jane (Silvia Presente), and eventually even has feelings for her. Jane and her little sister, Fanny (Florie May Wilkinson), seek William’s help after she murdered a man who tried to assault Fanny. While many wanted to see William and Jane as a couple in Outlander, the endeavor to save Jane from a deadly sentencing failed.
With Fanny left behind, William arranged for Claire and Jamie to take the girl back with them to Fraser’s Ridge to live in safety and have a steady life surrounded by love. Claire and Jamie being, well, Claire and Jamie, they agreed to care for Fanny. When they met though, something chilling happened. Claire heard Fanny sing a song from the 20th century, but it wasn’t just any song, it was the song that Claire sang to her stillborn baby all those years ago. This is just one of the eerie consequences caused by time-traveling in Outlander. When asked where she knows the melody and words from, Fanny explains that her deceased mother, a woman called Faith, used to always sing it to her.
What caused immense suspicion as well was the fact that Claire saw Master Raymond just days before, either as a vision or in real life, after she was shot and fighting for her life. He came to visit her, and delivered a rather confusing message. Master Raymond told her that it wasn’t her time yet, meaning Claire would live, but he also said that he was sorry without giving any explanation. The most likely case could be that Faith wasn’t stillborn, but actually lived, and Master Raymond stole the baby from Claire for whatever reason. It would also explain why Fanny sang a song that Claire sang to the baby, since Master Raymond was around Claire for quite some time and could have easily picked up the melody and words.

Is Faith Still Alive?

From the first moment on, it is made clear that Jane and Fanny were orphans, whose mother, Faith, wasn’t in the picture anymore. Details about their past or their mother’s death are kept a secret, which makes this cliffhanger in the Outlander Season 7 finale even more intriguing. Considering that Faith seemingly lived, it might be that Claire’s daughter is also a time traveler, which then again, could mean that Faith is still alive in a different time. This massive plot twist could lead to Claire trying to find her, but the actual circumstances will only be revealed in Outlander Season 8. At least, the highly anticipated spinoff Outlander: Blood of My Blood will be good entertainment while waiting for Jamie and Claire to return one last time.
In general, introducing such a massive storyline during the last season of this extremely successful, long-running hit series could truly go sideways though. Outlander is already packed with different stories unfolding simultaneously, which is entertaining on the one hand, but with jumping through time as well, it can quickly become confusing. Outlander Season 7 was almost ruined by making a massive mistake, which is why Season 8 of the beloved series is left with the task of ensuring a good pace, clear story developments, and bringing everything to a proper closure. As for Outlander’s Faith, the answer to the questions regarding her and her children’s existence are only revealed when Season 8 of Outlander will finally be released. It might be the perfect time to re-watch all the Outlander seasons and analyze all the information that’s given about Faith. Outlander is available to stream on Netflix.
