MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

65 – March 10

Sony Pictures Entertainment

65 follows Adam Driver as his spaceship is hit by an undocumented asteroid and comes crashing down on an “uncharted celestial body.” A struggle to survive turns into a sci-fi mystery as our hero slowly uncovers the fauna that lives on this strange world. Driver must fight off raptors and T-Rexes with his space-age technology. He slowly comes to realize that this isn’t an uncharted celestial body at all, but Earth, 65 million years in the past. He and Koa, a young girl and the only other survivor of the crash, must find a way back to their time.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves – March 31

Paramount Pictures

There have been attempts at making a Dungeons & Dragons movie before but never has someone assembled such amazing actors and poured so much money into special effects. Even if you haven’t played the infamous role-playing game, there is a lot to enjoy in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Trailers show a lute-toting Chris Pine being charming and funny as always in his role as Edgin the Bard. Fans of Bridgerton will recognize Regé-Jean Page as Xenk the Paladin. And fans of the Fast and Furious movies will recognize Michelle Rodriguez as Holga the Barbarian. Magic is cast, swords are swung, and dragons fly through the air in a movie that promises to deliver on familiar tropes of the tabletop game.

The Pope’s Exorcist – April 14

Sony Pictures Entertainment

The Pope’s Exorcist tells a curious story about a real-life priest who performed 100,000 exorcisms in his time. Russell Crowe plays Father Gabriele Amorth, Ralph Ineson voices a demon, and Franco Nero plays the Pope. The priest must battle Satan as he fights to rescue innocent souls from the fires of hell. You may think this is a story from times of old, but Father Amorth died recently in 2016. The exorcist famously wrote two memoirs, and now his story is now retold in ways that only Hollywood can recreate.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie – April 7

Illumination

Though it isn’t the first time Super Mario Bros. has been made into a movie, it certainly looks like it will be the best time. The Super Mario Bros. Movie promises something for the whole family. From the star-studded voice cast to the hilarious modern take on a video game classic, it promises to be a delightful movie that the whole family can enjoy. While it’s tough to put a plot to a game whose entire premise is to jump on mushrooms, writer Matthew Fogel seems to have done it. We can all expect a good time with references to games like Mario Kart and the original Super Mario Bros. With Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser, this is going to be one heck of a good time.

Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World – April 28

Sony Pictures Entertainment

Big George Foreman is a biopic of the famous boxer and takes the second half of its title from T.H. White’s famous novel about King Arthur, The Once and Future King. And although the title may be a bit long, it’s appropriate because the movie tells the story of how Foreman became the heavyweight champion of the world twice. Though more moviegoers of this generation may know Foreman for his grill instead of his boxing career, his life was filled with beautiful drama. The biopic will follow Foreman on his rise to champion, through his spiritual awakening, and back on his journey to becoming champion again. Khris Davis was cast as George Foreman, while Forest Whitaker plays Doc Broadus — Foreman’s coach — and Sullivan Jones plays Muhammad Ali.

Love Again – May 12

Sony Pictures Entertainment

Love Again was written and directed by James C. Stouse as an English-language remake of the German film SMS für Dich (Text for You), which itself was based on the novel by Sofie Cramer. In the film, Mira Ray (Priyanka Chopra Jones) bereaves her deceased love by texting his old phone number. By chance, Rob Burns (Sam Heughan) receives a phone with the same number. As Mira continues to pour her feelings into her phone, Rob becomes enamored with the mysterious person who is texting him. He uses information from the messages to meet her and the two fall in love, but Rob doesn’t tell her that he’s the one receiving her texts of longing. The movie also features appearances from Celine Dion, playing herself.

The Little Mermaid – May 26

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

The Little Mermaid may be known for its divisive relationship with audiences, but you can rest assured it’s going to be a good movie as well. Like other little mermaids that came before her, Halle Bailey’s character will trade her voice in order to gain the ability to walk on land. Though, you can probably expect a modern twist on the ending that most of us are familiar with from Disney’s golden age of princesses. What a lot of moviegoers are excited about in this family-friendly epic is the cast. Javier Bardem of No Country for Old Men will play King Triton and Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs will voice Sebastian. The audience will also hear the voices of Awkwafina as Scuttle and Jacob Tremblay as Flounder. Fans can’t wait to see Melissa McCarthy show up as Ursula. It’s a highly anticipated remake of a Disney classic.

The Machine – May 26

Sony Pictures Entertainment

The Machine is a film based on the stand-up comedy routine by Bert Kreischer. The single joke he told sent pebbles rolling into an avalanche as it spawned his own Netflix special and now his own movie. The story was about Kreischer when he met a train full of Russian gangsters as a student studying abroad. The film follows up on the story years later as it elaborates on the consequences of his adventure as the gangsters return years later. Jimmy Tatro plays a young Bert Kreischer, Mark Hamill plays his father, and Bert appears as a fictionalized version of himself.
