J.K. Simmons Addresses Whether He Would Return For Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4
Mar 17, 2023
When it comes to comic book franchise appearances, J.K. Simmons has endeared himself to both audiences of Marvel and DC projects over the last two decades. Whether it is his appearance in the DCU as Commissioner Gordon or as J. Jonah Jameson in both Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man universe and the MCU version, the actor has a dedicated fan base who cannot wait for his next appearance. Simmons seems more than happy to participate, including an appearance in any potential Sam Raimi movie, such as the long-canceled Spider-Man 4.
For fans of Simmons, the cancelation of Batgirl, which would have seen him reprise his role as Commissioner Gordon, was a blow, especially as it would have seen him working with Michael Keaton’s Batman. However, there is a strong probability that Simmons will be reprising his other famous comic book movie role of J. Jonah Jameson in future Spider-Man movies. When he was recently asked about whether he would consider also returning if Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 ever became a reality, the actor told the Inside of You with Micheal Rosenbaum podcast:
“Absolutely. I would do anything that Sam Raimi approached me with. I mean, almost anything.”
Naturally, with the opening of the MCU’s multiverse and a very thinly connected Sony Universe of Spider-Man characters evolving at Sony, the likelihood of Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 is very slim. However, there are still plenty of Spider-Man-related movies to come that Simmons could be a part of.

For fans of Spider-Man, who for decades had only animated cartoons and TV movies to bring the web-slinger to life, there has never been more Spider-Man content on the horizon. Tom Holland is expected to return in three more Spider-Man movies within the MCU, along with potential appearances in other MCU movies such as Avengers: Secret Wars. Outside of this, Sony will be looking to finally get things together on their own Spider-Man universe, which, other than the box office success of two Venom movies, has failed to capture its audiences with Morbius and is now hoping for better results with the likes of Kraven the Hunter and Madam Web rather than solely relying on Venom 3 keeping everything afloat.
Additionally, the upcoming Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is coming soon on the animated front, ensuring that the webbed-wonder is swinging into every possible market. As Marvel Comics’ most recognized icon, it is not surprising that there is always a new Spider-Man project waiting out there somewhere. Whether they all hit the mark is something only audiences can decide.
There is currently no date set for Tom Holland’s next outing as Peter Parker in the MCU, but Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse will be released on June 2, 2023, while Kraven the Hunter – another Spider-Man-related movie with no Spider-Man – will arrive on Oct. 6, 2023, to try and steady Sony’s live-action Spider-Man Universe.
