Single Drunk Female Cast on What to Expect in Season Two

Apr 12, 2023

God, grant her the serenity to keep the laughs coming. Season two of Freeform’s Single Drunk Female drops April 12 with the entire 10-episode new season available on Hulu and OnDemand the following day. Fans will appreciate where the show takes Sofia Black-D’Elia’s Sam, a recovering alcoholic, and others, this go-around, especially after last season’s sobering twists.

The biggest shocker of the season one finale was Sam discovering that friend/potential partner/fellow AA-er James (Garrick Bernard) slipped and started drinking again. That forced Sam to walk out of the Brit and Joel’s (Sasha Compère and Charlie Hall) already questionable wedding. On that note, the proverbial honeymoon is over for B & J. It actually never occurred—emotionally that is. Season two picks up six months after the events of the finale. Things are in flux for almost everybody.

Hang on. It’s a wild ride. Stars Garrick Bernard, Sasha Compère, and Lily Mae Harrington share more about the road ahead for SDF.

The Courage to Change

Single Drunk Female is inspired by creator Simone Finch’s own recovery. From the get-go, Sofia Black-D’Elia infused 20-something Sam, an alcoholic whose life imploded when we first met her, with spunk and desperation in equal measure. Living back home with mom (Ally Sheedy), whose life, at least from the outside, seemed totally in sync, also added to her emotional toll.

Garrick Bernard expressed his fascination with the series, his character James, and what he felt fans would be most surprised about in season two.

“I think audiences will be most surprised about the fact that there’s a time jump and we kind of just see James sit in the relapse. With the time jump, you might expect to have him reset to just being this very rigid person,” said Bernard. “But he’s still a mess and the time jump didn’t do anything but make him six months older. He’s still a little bit messier, a little bit scruffy, and failing a bit.

“James is definitely finding his path back to sobriety, and I think that it’s definitely a beautiful story,” he added. “And Sofia is a perfect scene partner, honestly. I definitely feel the gap [between our characters] this season because I don’t have a lot of scenes with her. It’s just me pushing the scenes on my own.”

James isn’t the only one going through changes. So is Sam. She feels she can’t trust James. Beyond that, she manages to maintain her sobriety, but when she lands a new gig as a listicle writer, things get messy. We won’t give away who her new boss is, but yeah, heads will turn on that one. Sobriety or not, Sam’s behavior comes into question. She may be sober, but she still can’t quite handle her emotions.

Another interesting note: Look for Ally Sheedy’s Carol to be reunited with a special guest star, who happens to be her fellow Breakfast Club alum. Best to experience that for yourself.

A Season Full of Wisdom and Laughs

For Sasha Compère, playing Brit has been rewarding. This season, viewers will be surprised at the decision she and Joel reach about their union, and the blatant truth they share with Sam about their initial hook-up.

“I feel like audiences are responding to the realism of the series and the realistic portrayal of going through the sobriety journey, but also with all the characters readjusting to life after a big change,” shared Compère. “There are seven or five major shifts that a person will go through in their lives, and I think each one of us is going through some of them. Whether it be the loss of someone, or a big move, or a change in work.”

It’s all about relatability, added Compère. “People connect to our characters because they can see a piece of themselves and each person’s journey. With Brit, there’s a major loss this season, which really sends her on a bit of a spiral and looking to regain that control she thought she had in her life. And then learning how to really be vulnerable with her friends and forgive herself.”

Lily Mae Harrington on Single Drunk Female

Freeform

Lily Mae Harrington has been a hoot to experience in Single Drunk Female. As Felicia, Sam’s fiery drinking buddy, she couldn’t wait for Sam to get out of rehab. But suddenly, she had to adjust to an entirely different, well, Sam. Somebody who is sober.

“What attracted to me to my character at first was Felicia’s growth and figuring her out as a character,” said Harrington. “I’m a Massachusetts girl, born and raised, and so when there was an opportunity to show a real Massachusetts girl and a blue-collar hairdresser, it’s like being able to connect it back to people I knew growing up. And it was uplifting to play somebody who was a teen mom and is a business owner.”

In real life, this SDF trio move through their own challenges, as we all do. Since the show is about people attempting to find better footing in their lives, it’s fitting to ask what helps these actors move through their hard stuff.

Harrington chimed in: “The way I deal with and explore my emotions is through music. Beyond that, I’ve heard Garrick talk about his character James, and how when things aren’t going really well, just being able to really admit that you’re overwhelmed and vulnerable. Having a support system and people you trust is big. They were the ones who kept me going and have saved my life multiple times.”

When asked why the show generated so much buzz, series co-star Ian Gomez, who plays Carol’s husband, Bob, summed it up best: ‘This show deals with someone becoming an adult and owning up to their own ‘stuff.’ And it’s done in such a way through the writing and acting, that it rings true. It’s completely believable and it doesn’t pander. The people are flawed yet they’re likable. You can’t help but root for them.”

Season two of Single Drunk Female hits Freeform April 11. All 10 episodes of the season will be available on Hulu the following day.
