The Super Mario Bros Movie 4DX Review
Apr 21, 2023
From the Mushroom Kingdom to the infamous Rainbow Road and beyond, The Super Mario Bros Movie catapults you (quite literally) in 4DX glory straight into the story. Here’s our Super Mario Bros movie 4DX review.
The Super Mario Bros. franchise has been a beloved part of popular culture for over three decades. So, it’s no surprise that fans were thrilled when news of a new movie was announced.
The Super Mario Bros. movie has been well received by audiences but not so much by critics. Fans took the nostalgic avenue of seeing Mario on the big screen once again and what better way to see the movie than in 4DX format.
Let’s dive right in with our Super Mario 4DX review.
What is 4DX?
4DX is a technology that adds sensory effects to movie watching. It involves special seats that move, vibrate, and rotate, as well as effects like wind, water, and scents. The aim of 4DX is to immerse viewers into the movie and make them feel like they are part of the action.
Effects immerse you into the story and are calibrated to what you are witnessing on screen. This multisensory format is exclusive to Cineworld cinemas only here in the UK and Ireland. From weather effects to calibrated movements and more you can enjoy a film like never before.
For me, Disney movies go hand in hand with 4DX technology due to the fact that more effort goes into making the experience more immersive when programming the effects. For Super Mario, it worked in some areas but dipped slightly in quality in others but nonetheless a fun experience all the same.
Synopsis
With help from Princess Peach, Mario gets ready to square off against the all-powerful Bowser to stop his plans from conquering the world.
The 4DX Experience
The 4DX technology works exceptionally well with The Super Mario Bros. movie. From the start of the film, viewers are immediately transported into the Mushroom Kingdom, with the seats moving and vibrating to match the action on screen. As Mario and Luigi jump, run and slide through the Mushroom Kingdom, the seats move with them, making it feel like you are right alongside them. Additionally, the effects of wind, water, and scents enhance the experience, bringing the scenes to life.
Atmospherics are rich during this particular 4DX experience. I loved the programming between good guy scenes vs bad guy scenes with the latter more vigorous and intense as the former.
One standout moment is when Mario and Luigi slide down a massive water slide in the middle of the jungle. The water effects are impressive, with viewers feeling a fine mist on their faces, which is a unique sensation. The scenes in Bowser’s castle are also exceptional, with the seats shaking and vibrating as the duo faces off against Bowser and his minions.
The 4DX experience elevates the action sequences in the film, making them more intense and engaging. The technology helps to immerse viewers into the movie, making it feel like they are part of the action.
The Characters
The Super Mario Bros. movie features a host of familiar characters, from Mario and Luigi to Bowser and Princess Peach. The characters are brought to life through the use of computer-generated imagery (CGI), which works well with the film’s overall aesthetic. The characters are colourful, and the designs are true to their video game counterparts.
The standout character is Bowser, who is menacing and powerful, just as he should be. Jack Black is the perfect person to voice the character and for me was the standout voice actor of the entire movie.
The other characters are well done, with Mario and Luigi being portrayed as likeable and charming. Princess Peach is also an essential character, and her scenes with Mario and Luigi are heartwarming.
Chris Pratt still doesn’t sit too well with me when it comes to voicing Mario, I was very detached from his line delivery and that was a shame but as a whole, the movie is full of enough easter eggs and joy for that to be a quickly forgettable oversight.
The dialogue in The Super Mario Bros. movie is serviceable, but it’s not particularly memorable. The film relies more on the action sequences and the visuals to drive the story forward. However, there are some humorous moments throughout the film that will undoubtedly make viewers laugh. The film doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is a good thing, and the lighthearted tone is sure to appeal to both adults and children.
