‘A Complete Unknown,’ ‘Wicked,’ ‘Shogun’ Top 2025 SAG Awards Nominations

Jan 9, 2025

The Screen Actor’s Guild is one of the largest unions in the United States with approximately 160,000 members. Today, out of respect for the wildfires devastating many parts of Los Angeles, the significantly smaller nominating committee’s selections for the 31st SAG Awards were revealed via press release. The big winners? “A Complete Unknown,” “Anora,” “Emilia Perez,” “Wicked,” “The Bear,” and “Shogun.”

The complete list of Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Motion Picture nominee are “Conclave,” “Emilia Perez,” “Wicked,” “Anora,” and “A Complete Unknown.” Acting ensembles on the outside looking in include “The Brutalist,” “Challengers,” “Sing Sing,” and “Dune: Part Two.” It should be noted that earning a nomination in this category is not a guaranteed bellwether of a Best Picture nomination. Over the last three years, just four of the five nominees made the Best Picture cut. In 2021, just two of the nomines were rewarded by AMPAS and in 2019 and 2020 just four of the five. The last time all five earned Best Picture nominations was a decade ago in 2015.
The Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role nominees are Mikey Madison (“Anora”), Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”), Karla Sofía Gascón (“Emilia Perez”), Demi Moore (“The Substance”) and, in a big surprise, Pamela Anderson (“The Last Showgirl”). Notable snubs in one of the most competitive Best Actress seasons in decades included Marianne Jean-Baptiste (“Hard Truths”), Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”), Angelina Jolie (“Maria”), and Fernanda Torres (“I’m Still Here“).
The Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role are lead by Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”), Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”), Timothée Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”), Daniel Craig (“Queer”), and Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”). The only notable omissions were Sebastian Stan (“A Different Man”) and Jesse Eisenberg (“A Real Pain”).
The Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role are Ariana Grande (“Wicked”), Zoe Saldana (“Emilia Perez”), Monica Barbaro (“A Complete Unknown), Danielle Deadwyler (“The Piano Lesson”), and, in another surprise, Jamie Lee Curtis (“The Last Showgirl”). Missing out were any of the stars of “His Three Daughters” (Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, Elisabeth Olsen), Elle Fanning (“A Complete Unknown”), Felicity Jones (“The Brutalist”), Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“Nickel Boys”), Isabella Rossellini (“Conclave”), Margaret Qualley (“The Substance”), and Saoirse Ronan (“Blitz”).
The nominees for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role are Yura Borisov (“Anora”), Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain“), Edward Norton (“A Complete Unknown”), Jeremy Strong (“The Apprentice”) and, in a morning of surprises, Jonathan Bailey (“Wicked”). Unexpected omissions include Guy Pearce (“The Brutalist”), Denzel Washington (“Gladiator II”), Clarence Maclin (“Sing Sing”), and Stanley Tucci (“Conclave”), among others.
On the television side, the nominees for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series are “Bridgerton,” “The Day of the Jackal,” “Shogun,” “Squid Game,” “The Diplomat,” and “Slow Horses.”
The nominees for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series are “Hacks,” “The Bear,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and “Shrinking.”
“Shogun” and “The Bear” lead all television programs with four nominations each. “The Diplomat” earned three.
Notably, Kathy Bates earned nominations for both her roles in “Matlock” and “The Great Lillian Hall.” Nicola Coughlan landed “Bridgerton” its first individual nomination since Regé-Jean Page in 2021. Both Kevin Kline and Cate Blanchett put “Disclaimer” on the map with individual nominations.
The 2025 SAG Awards will be held on February 23 and streamed live on Netflix at 5 PM PT/ 8 PM ET. Netflix star Kristen Bell, nominated for her role in “Nobody Wants This,” will emcee the event for the second time. She originally hosted in 2018.
