Agatha All Along Finally Confirms Mephisto’s Presence in the MCU

Oct 5, 2024

This article contains mild spoilers for Agatha All Along Episode 3.

Marvel fans have finally been given their first mention of a villain in the MCU several years after they were first certain he would appear. Agatha All Along has released its third episode on Disney+, and in the midst of the magical hijinks, fans heard the first mention of the name they have been anticipating since the arrival of WandaVision back in 2020; Mephisto.

The Marvel Comics devil has been on the tongues of fans for a long time. However, he has not only failed to materialize, but has never even been mentioned in any MCU project despite growing rumors of his imminent arrival. Thanks to the latest Marvel Television series, that has all changed and Mephisto’s existence in the franchise has finally been confirmed quietly but definitely.

During the latest episode of Agatha All Along, the mystery of what happened to Agatha’s son, Nicholas Scratch, is cause for concern among the witch’s new coven. While alone with Joe Locke’s Teen, Jennifer Kale warns the youngster – who has his own mysterious air about him – that Agatha cannot be trusted as it is believed that she traded her son to get her hands on the Darkhold. Kale tells Teen that it is possible that Scratch could have become an “agent of Mephisto.”

While that is as far as it goes – for now – this is how Marvel Studios often begin alluding to the upcoming arrival of characters within the franchise. Exactly how long it will before this tease pays off is something we can only wait and see, but fans should know by now that Marvel’s willingness to play the long game could mean Mephisto’s full impact on the MCU is not felt for some time yet.

Fans Have Been Theorizing on Mephisto’s First Appearance for Years

Like many other important characters from Marvel Comics, fans of the MCU have been speculating about where and when Mephisto could slip into the timeline and bring a little havoc to the world of heroes and villains. While it seems unlikely that Mephisto is the kind of character that will be thrown fully into the mix with the multiverse and Doctor Doom storylines that are to come in the next three years, that doesn’t mean that the character’s presence will not be felt sooner rather than later.

Many fans originally believed that Mephisto would be the antagonist of WandaVision, but when that didn’t come to pass they suggested several other places he could appear – or even characters that he could actually be hiding in the skin of. This included the original She-Hulk character of Madisynn (spelled “with two N’s and one Y, but it’s not where you thiiiink…”) King, who was sent to a hell dimension by a magician where many fans believe she met and made a deal with the demon.

Like many other theories, this has neither been confirmed nor denied in any official capacity, so is still some kind of possibility in the grand scheme of all things Marvel. It has been heavily rumored that the upcoming Ironheart series, which will give Riri Williams her own vehicle after her Black Panther: Wakanda Forever debut, will feature Sacha Baron Cohen as Mephisto. Whether the mention of the character in Agatha All Along now makes that more or less likely is hard to gauge, as there is still a lot to be revealed about next year’s Disney+ series.
