The Directors Guild had their award season say on Saturday night, but a little over 12 hours later the BAFTA Film Awards handed out their 2023 honors. Broadcast in the U.S. in a bizarre “we’re not live until the last four honors” set up on Britbox, the big winner of the night was Edward Berger’s “All Quiet on the Western Front.” The Netflix release stunned winning Best Film as well as six other honors including Best Director, the Film Not in the English Language honor, Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Sound, and Original Score.

Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” took four awards: Supporting Actress (Kerry Condon), Supporting Actor (Barry Keoghan), Original Screenplay, and Outstanding British Film.
Austin Butler won Best Actor for “Elvis” likely locking in an Academy Award win. Catherine Martin won her third Costume Design BAFTA Award while the Baz Luhrmann period piece also won the Makeup & Hair and Casting BAFTAs.
In a very competitive category, Cate Blanchett won Best Actress for “TAR.” “Everything Everywhere All At Once” won Best Editing, “Avatar: The Way of Water won Visual Effects, “Babylon” took Production Design.
Continuing its awards season sweep, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinnochio” took Animated Film. Charlotte Wells’ “Aftersun” took the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer. In something of a surprise, “Navalny” won Best Documentary.
Emma Mackey, best known for “Sex Education,” “Death on the Nile” and “Emily” (now in U.S. theaters), won the BAFTA Rising Star award.
Having taken the top prize at BAFTA, is that a bellwether for “All Quiet’s” chances for the Best Picture Oscar? Unlike the Brits, the Academy Awards use a ranked-choice voting system and the PGA Awards are the only other Oscar precursor to do so. Moreover, over the past eight years only one film that took BAFTA’s top prize, “Nomadland,” also won the Best Picture Oscar. All eyes are now on the PGA Awards on Saturday, February 25. That guild’s top producer prize for theatrical release has lined up with Best Picture seven out of the last 10 years.
It should also be noted that this is Netflix’s third BAFTA win for Best Film. Neither “Roma” nor “The Power of the Dog” ended up taking the Academy Award for Best Picture. Perhaps three times the charm.
