American Fiction, May December And Past Lives Top 2024 Spirit Awards Nominations
Dec 5, 2023
The Gotham Awards, the New York wing of the indie film world, has already handed out its year-end honors and now it’s time for the West Coast to have their say. Bright and early this morning, Film Independent revealed the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards nominees, and, no surprise, Celine Song’s “Past Lives” was at the top of the list with five nominations. What may have been more surprising is that Todd Haynes’ “May December” and Cord Jefferson’s “American Fiction” also landed five nominations each.

Those three films were joined in the Best Film category by “All of Us Strangers” (three nominations), “Passages” (four nominations), and “We Grow Now” (three nominations). While the crossover between the Spirit Awards and its former weekend big brother, the Oscars, ebbs and flows over the years, it should be noted that in 2023 three Best Film nominees earned Academy Award nominations for Best Picture. In 2022, there were none while in 2021, there were just two.
The Robert Altman Award, which goes to the director and the ensemble cast, went to Kelly Reichardt’s “Showing Up.” The requisite television version of that award, the Best Ensemble Award for a Television Series, goes to “Jury Duty.”
Best Lead Performance nominees include Jessica Chastain (“Memory”), Greta Lee (“Past Lives”), Trace Lysette (“Monica”), Natalie Portman (“May December”), Judy Reyes (“Birth/Rebirth”), Franz Rogowski (“Passages”), Andrew Scott (“All of Us Strangers”), Teyana Taylor (“A Thousand and One”), Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”), and Teo Too (“Past Lives”). Best Supporting Performance nominees include Erika Alexander (“American Fiction”), Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”), Noah Galvin (“Theater Camp”), Anne Hathaway (“Eileen”), Glenn Howerton (“BlackBerry”), Marin Ireland (“Eileen”), Charles Melton (“May December”), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”), Catalina Saavedra (“Rotting in the Sun”), and Ben Whishaw (“Passages”).
The International Film category was led by Gotham Awards winner “Anatomy of a Fall” (continuing to prove France’s mistake by not submitting it for Oscar), Iceland’s “Godland,” Nigeria’s “Mami Wata,” Mexico’s “Totem,” and the United Kingdom’s “The Zone of Interest.” Best Documentary nominees included “Bye Bye Tiberias,” “Four Daughters,” “Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project,” “Kokomo City,” and “The Mother of All Lies.
On the television side, “The Last Of Us” and “I’m A Virgo” earned four nominations each while Gotham Award winner “Beef” took three. Best New Scripted Series nominees include “Beef,” “Dreaming Whilst Black,” “I’m A Virgo,” “Jury Duty” and “Slip.”
Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series nominees include Emma Corrin (“A Murder at the End of the World”), Dominique Fishback (“Swarm”), Betty Gilpin (“Mrs. Davis”), Jharrel Jerome (“I’m a Virgo“), Zoe Lister-Jones (“Slip”), Bel Powley (“A Small Light”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Ramón Rodríguez (“Will Trent”), Ali Wong (“Beef”) and Steven Yeun (“Beef”). Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series honorees are Murray Bartlett (“The Last of Us”), Billie Eilish (“Swarm”), Jack Farthing (“Rain Dogs”), Nick Offerman (“The Last of Us”), Adina Porter (“The Changeling”), Lewis Pullman (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Benny Safdie (“The Curse”), Luke Tennie (“Shrinking”), Olivia Washington (“I’m a Virgo”), and Jessica Williams (“Shrinking”).
This year’s Spirit Awards will be hosted by Aidy Bryant and streamed on YouTube from the ceremony’s traditional tent on Santa Monica Beach.
