American Horror Story Star Angelica Ross Says Emma Roberts Apologized for Misgendering Her

Oct 4, 2023

Summary

Trans rights activist Angelica Ross commends Emma Roberts for apologizing and acknowledging her transphobic behavior on the set of American Horror Story: 1984. Ross reveals incidents where Roberts purposely misgendered her and mocked her voice, leading to self-consciousness on set. Ross also claims that Roberts played mind games and asserted her dominance on set, making it difficult for others to work with her.

Trans rights activist and actress Angelica Ross says Emma Roberts has apologized for transphobic remarks made while the two co-starred in American Horror Story: 1984. Through different social media platforms, Ross shared several behind-the-scene incidents that painted Roberts in a negative light. Now, Ross has taken to X (previously Twitter) to commend Roberts for reaching out and taking accountability for her mistakes. Ross wrote:

“Thank you @RobertsEmma for calling and apologizing, recognizing your behavior was not that of an ally. I will leave the line open to follow up on your desire to do better and support social justice causes with your platform.”

Earlier this week, Ross shared (via Instagram Live) that, in-between takes, Roberts had purposely misgendered the trans actress while speaking to a crew member named John (speculated to be director John J. Gray). According to Ross’ account, Roberts was joking around that Ross was “being mean,” to which John responded, “OK, ladies, you know, that’s enough. Let’s get back to work.” That’s when, Ross shared, Roberts looked over at Ross, and asked, “Don’t you mean lady?.” alluding that there was only one woman present.

In another post on X, Ross shared that Emma mocked her by mimicking her voice and laugh and dropping it “several octaves.” Ross claims that following that incident, she was self-conscious about her voice on set. Ross also called out Roberts for playing “mind games” with the AHS: 1984 team, saying:

“Folks seemed like they wanted to fight her all the time because she was playing psychological games on set.” According to Ross, Roberts’ behavior went unchecked as she made “it very clear that she was number one on the call sheet, and she was the one in charge.”

Roberts has appeared in six seasons of the FX anthology series, including the ongoing 12th season, titled Delicate. The current season marks her return to the American Horror Story universe following 2019’s 1984. Following AHS: 1984, Ross returned to the series for 2021’s AHS: Double Feature. Ross also collaborated with AHS co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk on the award-winning series Pose, a drama spotlighting New York’s underground ball culture, an LGBTQ+ movement that first gained notice in the late 1980s.

Angelica Ross Claims Ryan Murphy Left Her “On Read”
FX

Ross aired her grievances with another AHS colleague this week. Despite her multiple collaborations with Murphy, Ross says she was “left on read” by Murphy after the two discussed an all-Black season of AHS. Ross shared a screenshot of a 2020 message from Murphy that read:

“Remember your idea about a Horror seasons starring Black women? Well I’m doing it,” Murphy wrote to Ross. “Not sure of the story yet, but we will start a writers room in the fall. Along with you, who are the four women I should get? I think you, Keke Palmer, Gabby … not sure of the fourth?”

Ross responded, offering a list of possible stars for the proposed season, but Murphy never responded. Ross says she most recently followed up with Murphy in 2022, via email, but still got no response. On X, she shared:

“After not hearing back. After sending flowers and no response I sent one last email in Feb 2022 (it took about a year to film season 10 due to COVID) while still contractually in first position with the show. Mind you, marvel had called twice now. I haven’t heard from him since.”

Angelica Ross recently appeared in the documentary special, The Freedom to Exist with Elliot Page – A Soul of a Nation Presentation, and the animated drama Captain Zero: Into the Abyss.
