“An R-Rated Sci-Fi Movie At This Scale Shouldn’t Exist”
Nov 17, 2023
Fans already knew director’s cuts for Zack Snyder‘s two upcoming “Rebel Moon” movies are coming, but EW got even more details about them in a new interview with Snyder. And while when they’ll get released by Netflix isn’t confirmed yet, other details about them are. Like, for instance, both will be R-rated, more violent, and an hour longer than the theatrical cuts. And intriguingly, that’s what Netflix wanted all along: they talked to Snyder about having two edits of the “Rebel Moon” films very early in development.

“This was the first time I had ever been able to make a movie and plan for that,” Snyder told EW. “The cut was not me fighting with them like, ‘Okay, you won’t do what I want. Can I at least release it on DVD?’ It was us going together.” It’s hard not to juxtapose Snyder and Netflix’s apparently seamless agreement about director’s cuts with Snyder’s tumultuous relationship with Warner Bros. over “Zack Snyder’s Justice League.” Whereas that edition of “Justice League” needed a fan movement to get it released, the “Rebel Moon” films receive their director’s cuts as part of their production endgame.
But Snyder clarified that while each “Rebel Moon” film has two cuts, each cut differs, and he doesn’t have a favorite. “I’m super proud of the PG-13 version, the broader audience version, because I would say it really satisfies an awesome, timeless, mythological scope,” Snyder explained. “What we’ve done with the other version is fun and subversive because an R-rated sci-fi movie at this scale shouldn’t exist.” And yes, the R-rated cuts will be longer, too. “It’s a full hour longer,” added Snyder. “It’s not just slightly different or a little bit more. There are big chunks of the movie that are different.”
Snyder’s comments follow up on previous ones he said about the “Rebel Moon” director’s cuts to Vanity Fair in June. The PG-13 version is the one “that anyone can enjoy and watch,” Snyder explained to VF, while the R-rated cuts are more for adults and diehard Snyder fans. “I think for fans of mine and people who are ready to take a deeper, harder dive, that’ll be fun for them,” Snyder added.
So, a lot of Zack Snyder is coming to Netflix very very soon. And it all starts next month when “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child Of Fire” premieres on Netflix on December 22. The film also gets a limited engagement in theaters starting on December 15. Then “Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver” arrives next year on April 19, 2024. Stay tuned for the exact dates that the director’s cuts debut on Netflix.
