Ana de Armas Stars in SNL’s American Girl Doll Movie Trailer

Apr 30, 2023

Saturday night’s edition of Saturday Night Live took aim at Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie. A recent trailer for the film highlights the colorfully over-the-top nature of the film, which sees Barbie and Ken leave Barbieland to see what awaits them in the real world. Hoping to top that insanity, SNL aired a parody trailer for American Girls, a live-action feature film based on the American Girl dolls. Guest host Ana de Armas is included in the sketch as one of the live-action American Girls, as you can see by watching the parody trailer below, per SNL on YouTube.

“People can’t stop talking about the trailer for the new Barbie movie, but not all dolls live in a dream house,” the trailer narrator says. “Some are bigger, younger, sadder. Some dolls are American Girls!”

The trailer then kicks off with a scene spoofing the moment in the Barbie trailer where Margot Robbie and the other Barbies say hello to one another. Only in American Girls, nobody says hello to Ego Nwodim’s Addy, a slight that doesn’t go unnoticed. Addy also makes things a bit awkward when the dolls are explaining their tragic backstories, with Addy revealing that she’s a “runaway slave.”

There are no pink corvettes or boyfriends for the American Girls, but they seem to know how to have a good time by putting on their own “fashion show” with old-fashioned clothes. The trailer also further teases for filmgoers to “come for the fun” and “stay for the overburdened preteens wearing four layers of coats and pantaloons.”

American Girls: Still Not as Crazy as Barbie

The parody trailer for American Girls is wild, but it still may not be quite as outlandish as Barbie. While there’s been a lot of praise given to the script, many people involved have also been upfront about the fact that the film is out there and unlike anything else you’ll find in theaters today. Margot Robbie recently spoke about how she didn’t think the film would ever get greenlit.

This was Ana de Armas’ hosting debut for Saturday Night Live. She was joined by musical guest Karol G. The hosting stint follows a highly acclaimed performance in the Marilyn Monroe-based movie Blonde, which made her the first Cuban woman to be nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars. Ana de Armas is currently working on Ballerina, a John Wick spinoff, and she can next be seen in the Apple TV+ movie Ghosted which premieres on April 21. You can stream her episode of Saturday Night Live on Peacock.
